Obituary

Alexander (Al) was born in Buffalo, New York on November 14, 1931 to parents, Alexander Sr.and Jeannie. They were of Scottish descent and he had one brother, Eugene.

Al learned to be a mechanic early on and served in the Army during the Korean War, as a mechanic in Japan.

He enjoyed roller skating, in fact that's where he met his wife Dolores. They would have been married 60 years May 8,2014.

They have two sons Gary the oldest and Craig along with one grandson (Gary's son) Ryan , which he adored.

He enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping and fishing.

Alexander(Al) and Dolores(Dee) moved from Buffalo,N.Y. to Long Beach,Ca. with Dee's dear Sister Camille and her husband Jim.

Al worked at Sears where he made many life long friends, one friend Jerry Gore helped him obtain his job in the oil fields in Huntington Beach. Huntington Beach is where they lived and raised their boys. Al became a skilled mechanic and enjoyed fixing and creating small gadgets. He built from the ground up a dune buggy with the help of his son Gary which they enjoyed riding in with family and friends.

Al's wonderful sense of humor and a gentle kindness is the reason people were drawn to him. He was very even tempered and forgiving.

Al and Dee later enjoyed going dancing with friends as well as having friends and family over to play cards. Al and Dee really enjoyed traveling with their boys where they would use a tent and later a camper and also motor homes. Al and Dee had a lot of fun going to casinos, where they especially enjoyed playing Keno! Al was a fun loving person that liked interacting with all the people at the casino from valet and bell people to cashier and change people as well as casino hosts and restaurant workers. Al got great enjoyment from the accomplishments his and Dee"s Grandson Ryan achieved in the Army. Al and Dee would travel to Colorado to visit Ryan and would go to Ryan's dog training facility. The entire Matthews family are Lakers fans, and Al would attend games with his son Craig.

Unfortunately Al had poor health at an early age but with the love, devotion, and strength of his wife Dee he over came many of his health problems. Some times doctors would consult Dee as if she was one of their team on some medical issues. She kept a full journal on him. If Al was in the hospital she never left his side. She did the same thing when he was forced by health issues to move to Precious Home Care facility. Such devotion between two people is very rare in this day and age. He was cared for by Grace Radford and her family and staff as well as visiting physical therapists helping with Al"s mobility. A mutual Love and respect instantly developed between Grace and her team and the entire Matthews family!

Al was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.
