Obituary

Alexander S. Melgun, 92, died peacefully at home on October 20, 2022. Born in Cleveland as a first-generation American of Polish-Russian parents, Alex was raised as a proper gentleman with European manners. He was fluent in Polish and Russian and was recently studying French. Alex was awarded his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology from Adelbert College, Case Western Reserve University, and his Juris Doctor in Contract Law from the School of Law, Case Western Reserve University. After completing his formal education, Alex entered the United States Navy, training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center.

Upon discharge from the Navy as a Corpsman (paramedic), Alex settled in California, married his first wife, started a family, and began his career. He was admitted to practice law at the California Bar in 1961 and at the Bar of the United States Supreme Court in 1964. As an attorney specializing in contracts and purchasing law, Alex was employed by various companies including Atomics International, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, The Aerospace
Corporation, and Hughes Aircraft Company. After he retired, he was certified by the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Dispute Resolution Services, as a pro bono mediator for the County of Los Angeles and the City of Santa Monica. Always interested in singing, Alex sang with the Men's Choir at Adelbert College and with the Blue Jackets Choir of the United States Navy. At home in civilian life, he privately sang opera solos in Italian, German, and French, and religious solos in Latin.

Alex and his wife Mary St. John relocated to Laguna Woods Village in 2004. From there he traveled frequently and was active in the Kiwanis organization, the Democratic Club, the Florence Sylvester Senior Center, the Foundation of Laguna Woods Village, and the Saddleback Medical
Center Foundation. Alex is survived by his wife Mary, his children Carla, Elizabeth, and Thomas, and two grandchildren. He was always loving, supportive, honest, outgoing, and fun. May his memory be a blessing to all of us.
