IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alexander
Mendivil
January 8, 1951 – February 9, 2023
Alexander Mendivil, born January 8, 1951 in Los Angeles, passed away on February 9, 2023 in his Laguna Beach home. Alexander was known as Alex to his wife, friends, and family, and Grandpa to his loving grandkids. He was born to Lyda Chazaro Mendivil and Alexander Romandia Mendivil, (both passed). Alex had five brothers, retired Colonel Bill Morales, Marco Morales (passed), John Mendivil, Perry Mendivil, and Darryl Mendivil. He met his future wife Kathy in high school and they were married in 1995 on the Island of Kauai.
Alex graduated from UCSD in 1973, majoring in BS Micro Biology. He went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1981. He did a residency at LA County Hospital and went on to become a General Medical Practitioner at Scripps Hospital for 25 years.
In tribute to our Grandpa from his granddaughters.
Our grandpa will always be remembered in the hearts of family, friends, and even complete strangers. We want to share what many of you already know, that we were so very lucky to have had him in our lives. Grandpa taught us some of the most important values a person can have; family, generosity, and embracing life.
We can't remember a single family gathering where grandpa didn't express his appreciation for those around him. Oftentimes, after the family finished one of grandma's meals, and the party began to wind down, grandpa would lean back and he'd say, "this is what it's all about." He was the kind of person who noticed and appreciated those small moments of a family's love. This affection translated into the stories he would tell us about his parents, aunt, siblings, and so many others he cared about. He loved our grandma and would tell us about when they were younger and that he knew someday he'd marry her. Grandpa was there for the family he married into and clearly loved to have everyone around. Together we enjoyed pizza from the pizza oven, running down to the beach, and just having a good time. We'll always miss seeing him in his easy chair after parties when it was just us, him and his granddaughters, playing piano and watching the sun set over the ocean.
Our Grandpa was a giving person, not only to his loved ones, but to complete strangers as well. He touched the lives of many patients in his time as a doctor whether it was by being a good listener or even saving lives. He dedicated his life to working for the good of others. We'll never forget one Christmas when he wasn't able to get home for the holiday because a patient was very ill. He saved that person's life and when he finally made it home he said, "That was the best gift I could have ever received." Our Grandpa was generous in so many ways for us growing up. He was our biggest supporter when it came to school, our hobbies, and dreams. He often asked us about our educations and piano lessons. He was generous with his energy, taking us to bookstores, aquariums, and teaching us how to garden. And he was generous with his time, to have long conversations, and enjoy time together as a family. He loved to give, and he never stopped giving even when it was something as simple as an extra bottle of olive oil to take home. We never left with an empty hand. His motto was "our house is your house". Unbeknownst to him he was generous enough to give us a lifetime of memories and stories to treasure when he is no longer here. For this, we will always be grateful.
Our Grandpa was also a man who loved adventure. He was frequently off on a skiing trip with our grandma, fishing with friends in Mexico, or showing us the wonders of our own Southern California. As children we often didn't perceive he was sick or the trials he was going through with his health. We saw a man who was strong, met life head on, and taught us to embrace the adventures that life brings. He was always up to something whether it was as simple as cycling around Laguna, or as intense as helicopter skiing. He lived life to the fullest. Grandpa also loved the calmer side of life. It was a common sight to see him reading a new science book in his easy chair, gardening, or finding unique snacks to buy. How can we not mention all the trouble Grandpa and us got into with snacks we weren't supposed to have; just one more cookie when no one's looking. We'll always remember him saying things like, "Did you try the figs? You have to try it with balsamic.", "look at this fancy mustard I ordered", "we really need to pick the apples and bake a pie". Not only did we love it when he shared his interests with us as kids, but they became lifelong interests of ours because of him. We wish we could tell him that so much of what we want from life is because of him. Throughout our childhood and adulthood, grandpa was actively shaping our interests, character, and appreciation for life.
Our Grandpa will be greatly missed by his family, friends and granddaughters. We love you so much, Aliyah and Aminah.
