When on the drill team a transition maneuver (not a written one) but called a Savard Manual and a Hidden Savard that takes you to the Inverted Carry. These are Army Drill Team Maneuvers and kind of tricky – Half Spin-out and then Half Spin-in right when you reach Full Extension. In the 50s all Tomb Sentinels marched on the Drill Team, a Drill Master contacted a friend who was a previous senior soloist on the Old Guard, Andres Ryan, he remembered and described the maneuver. In The words of a Drill

His time as guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was his proudest.  He is a lifelong member of (SHGTUS) The Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Over the years he maintained friendships with fellow veterans that served with him. He was a member of American Legion Post 91in MA and Post 380 Lake Arrowhead CA.

By chance, when on leave from the Army, October of 1957 he visited his sister in East Bridgewater MA and there on a blind date he met Rene, it was love at first sight. When his tour ended in1958 he returned to East Bridgewater, married her and moved to 184 South ST where they brought up their family.  In 1980 the family relocated to SO CA where he started his own business serving his clients as a Registered Investment Advisor/Financial Planner.  During his spare time, he learned about growing organic avocados in our property Pauma Valley, CA.  This is where he prided himself that he could plan/build our home.  He also liked playing golf while a member of Coto de Caza and Pauma Valley Country Club courses, and proudly stated that he made 3 holes in one.

His latest pastime was woodworking, he had all the right tools to set up a workshop in the garage.  Many hours spent building pieces of furniture and his favorite was to create keepsake wooden boxes that he gave to family and friends. These items will be cherished forever.

Al made many friends over his lifetime, he was a genuine, loyal, loving and generous man, very proud of his family and their accomplishments. He loved people and a friend to all.

He will be interred at Riverside National Cemetery.
