Mom was the daughter of Grace and Edwin Harris Spear. She leaves her children Suzanne Gladstone Serna, Jeanne Chapman, Joanne Gladstone and grandchildren Richard, Christopher, and Sarah Bertsch, and Anne and Ryan Chapman, along with her great grandchildren Faith and Lilly.
Her brother James Spear, treasured son Joseph and dearly loved husband Charles Lett have already left us.
Our mother was amazing. Beautiful, sensitive, intuitive, open minded, and perceptive. She had a fearless sense of adventure and would swim further than anyone else in search of sea turtles while snorkeling in the waters of Hawaii. Her lifelong love of the ocean, the stars and the universe, and exploring philosophy, science and religion through the books she loved all served to make her a unique and fascinating person. Our mother loved us unconditionally. Every visit ended with a long embrace scented by her signature Red perfume. Every conversation and text ended with an "I love you."
Our mother spoke often of her beloved childhood dog Spotty. She had a tremendous amount of compassion and love for animals. As children we brought home every stray animal in need – and there were many of them. Mom never said no and she provided love and care to them all. Cats, dogs, birds, fish, hamsters, mice, rats and even snakes- they all had a home with our family.
Mom loved to tell us about her carefree days as a child playing school with her dolls and climbing trees with her best friend Esther Curtis; years later they reunited and remained close until Esther recently passed away. Mom loved the weekly Sunday dinners with her wonderful father and extended family.
Family and friendships were dear to our mother and among the many friendships she cultivated throughout the years her most treasured was the one with Janice Rothfield. She and Jan met during nursing school and as the years passed they shared a deep and wonderful connection, sisters in each other's heart.
Mom as you begin your next adventure may your amazing compassionate soul be embraced with loving arms. Swim in the ocean surrounded by dolphins and turtles, climb beautiful trees, and continue your pursuit of the mysteries of the universe.
Aloha Mom. Until we meet again.
