Barbara Jane Herson, known affectionately to so many as “Granna” or simply “the Gran,” passed away peacefully of natural causes on June 26, 2026, in Laguna Woods, California. Born on January 12, 1941, in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Barbara filled her 85 years with laughter, devotion, and a radiance that warmed every life she touched.
Barbara’s early years were spent in Seattle, where she attended St. Anne’s Catholic High School. Forever the social spirit, Barb was a cheerleader who filled the halls with her vivacity, quickly forging friendships with her infectious smile and magnetic energy. She took some courses at the University of Washington, where her dynamic nature only grew, gathering experiences and spreading joy wherever she went.
Those who knew Barbara know that she approached life with unbridled enthusiasm. She was full of love and light, with a personality that lit up any room. People were naturally drawn to her outgoing spirit and zest for life. She was truly the life of any gathering. Whether you were a timeworn friend or a new acquaintance, Barbara’s kind words and enthusiastic compliments always made you feel cherished; she never missed a chance to make someone feel special.
Barbara was a woman of many passions: gardening, cooking, the serenity of the outdoors, and, above all, spending time with her beloved family. She loved the beach, the mountains, and especially reveled in fishing, with memories of her trip to Alaska standing out as some of her happiest adventures. Her kitchen was often filled with the scent of delicious homemade meals, and her door was always open for family BBQs and glowing holiday dinners. Laughter was as much a part of the atmosphere as the joyous melodies she had playing, and she was never one to turn down a dance, whether at the gym, TGIF, or spontaneously in her own living room.
Throughout her life, Barbara’s home was known for its pristine cleanliness. She was always cleaning, and the familiar scent of bleach underscored her dedication. Family and friends recall her wit and humor; she would brighten spirits and draw out laughter even at the most unexpected moments. Her love for her children and grandchildren was limitless. She adored each of them to pieces and delighted in every moment spent together, never missing a chance to share their stories or celebrate their joys.
A woman of strong faith, Barbara cherished her regular visits to church, finding strength and peace in her relationship with the Lord. Her faith never wavered, even in the face of adversity.
Barbara was a fighter and a proud 45-year survivor of breast cancer. Her courage and resilience served as an inspiration to those around her. For years, she was a steady participant in the Race for the Cure in Newport Beach, dedicating her time and energy to supporting others as part of a survivor’s support group. Her empathy and encouragement provided light for others traveling through dark times.
Of all her many accomplishments, Barbara treasured her family most. She was immeasurably proud of her children and grandchildren, and her legacy lives on brightly within them.
Barbara is survived by a large and loving family: her cherished children Rick, Kim, Tim, Jeff, John, David, and step-son Bill; her adored grandchildren Ariel, McKinley, Brady, Nicholas, Colton, McKenna, Ryan, Spencer, Patrick, Kelley, Paige, and Karissa; great-granddaughters Aubrey and Lori; as well as daughters-in-law Natalie, Joy, Joni, Melissa, and son-in-law Per. She leaves behind dear grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss her warm embrace, her laughter, and the way she made every person feel treasured.
She is reunited in peace with her beloved husband Bob, her mother Jane, father Bert, step-father Harvey, grandmother Grace, grandfather Fred, sister Sue Blanche, and brother David.
The family invites all who were touched by Barbara’s love to join in a Funeral Mass celebrating her remarkable life on July 24th, at 11:00am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 51 Marketplace, Irvine, CA 92602. The Mass will be an opportunity to remember her spirit, her faith, and the boundless love she showered upon everyone she met.
Barbara Jane Herson will forever be remembered for the joy she brought to the world, the warmth of her hugs, her resiliency, and the unbreakable bonds of love she created with her family and friends. Her legacy will continue to shine in the laughter of her grandchildren, in the family meals lovingly prepared, and in the hearts of all who had the gift of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and always cherished.
