On August 13th, 2018, in the loving company of his daughter Julia and his life partner Linda, Barrie William Day of Laguna Niguel, passed away at Orange County Global Medical Center. His death followed a difficult two week hospitalization to treat complications related to a severe medication reaction. He was 77 years old.
Barrie was born in Wembley, England to Bill and Thora Day. Barrie enjoyed a wonderful, at times mischievous childhood and adolescence. He considered himself very lucky to have lived a very rich life because his father taught him how to sail as well as woodworking, his grandfather taught him to appreciate classical music, an uncle taught him to love jazz, and his other uncle taught him about the finer things in life. He came from a military family which led him to serve his country by entering into the British Army Reserve.Barrie and Dianne Surridge married in 1965 and divorced in 1990. They have two loving children, Andrew William David Day and Julia Susan Claire Day.
Barrie earned a degree in Engineering from the Imperial College in London and obtained advanced degrees and awards from programs at UC Berkeley, Stanford University and University of Southern California.
Barrie's professional career was vast and varied. It included work with Honeywell, Phillips, CIL Paints, Apple Computer and owning Ocean Yacht Adventures, a sailboat charter company. He was very proud and involved with his SAP consulting business and oversaw various projects ranging from Strategy, Change Management, and deployment of multiple SAP Projects globally. Barrie was the owner and CEO of various companies including, Enterprise Technology Solutions, SAP Global Consulting, and his current venture of Sapphire Global Consulting. He also authored a change management book, called "Change and How to Survive in the New Economy". Barrie also worked with CEO's of major Fortune 500 high tech corporations in this country and overseas to re-engineer and transform their operating performance. Barrie is considered one of the foremost experts on the area of change, both in individuals and in large corporations. His research has led him to solutions for individuals outside of the corporate world with pragmatic advice and specific action steps to guide and assist anyone interested in making change and reinventing themselves.
He was one of those "most interesting men in the world." From his varied work in England, Holland, Canada, the US, and really throughout the world, he was a Renaissance kind of a guy. He learned to speak several languages and entertained us many with accents of many other countries. His interests were so varied from his eclectic musical tastes, especially classical music and jazz, to his love and appreciation of the arts and passion for fine food and appropriate beverage pairings. He played cricket, tennis and squash back in the day, and instilled the love of football (soccer) into his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his naps, spending time at Kinko's and eating sausage rolls. He had an amazing sense of humor and a knack for instantly being able to connect with a diverse set of people. He was knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects and enjoyed engaging in spirited debates about business practices, politics, sports and the economy, just to name a few. He was an avid sailor and owned several boats in his life. Barrie had the ability to hang with the rich and famous, and he certainly did. But he was equally at home in a comfortable pair of jeans, sitting at a coffee shop, reading a newspaper and just relaxing with family and friends.
In 1998 he met Linda Kwan and spent the next 20 years as life partners living in various places around the world including but not limited to the Bay Area, Orange County, and England. He was a strong, supporting, and loving "stepfather" to Linda's daughter Stephanie Leong.
Barrie was passionate about life and lived it to the fullest. He believed that "there is only today, the past doesn't really matter, and there is no guarantee for a tomorrow", and because of that he lived life on his terms to ensure happiness.
Since moving to Southern California in 2004, he continued to enjoy the simple and finer things in life. As always, the ocean and sailboats called to him, so he spent many hours at Dana Point Harbor and other neighborhoods along the coast. He enjoyed coffee shops for the coffee, but also for the ambience and energy it brings. He was a true entrepreneur and activist wanting to bring change to businesses and the world. Barrie was always on the hunt for the best luggage, backpacks and laptop cases to keep him mobile and travel-ready. Barrie loved to travel, but even deeper than that he enjoyed cultures rich in community, people, history, and story. He was often on the lookout for the next best place to live out a new adventure, even if it meant living there for a short 6 months.
He was loved and will be greatly missed.
