IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barry Scott
Simon
September 25, 1940 – September 21, 2025
Barry Scott Simon, 84, of El Toro, California, passed peacefully in his sleep on September 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones in his family home—exactly as he had wished.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Barry attended Lane Tech High School before joining the United States Marine Corps, where he served in Okinawa, Japan. While on leave, he met the love of his life, Gilberta (Birdie) Simon, who agreed to go out with him because he was such a good dancer. They married in 1964 and enjoyed 56 years together until her passing in 2020. They raised three children, who in turn blessed them with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Barry worked for Pacific Bell, later AT&T, dedicating many years of service to the company. He began by emptying payphones and climbing poles to repair phone lines, eventually working his way up to management before retiring.
A devoted father, Barry could often be found camping with Indian Guides, coaching AYSO soccer, or carpooling a gaggle of girls to ballet class. He also lovingly cared for his father, Edward Simon, USMC, for eight years. Barry and Birdie welcomed many family members into their home over the years, making the Simon home a true sanctuary.
In retirement, Barry and Birdie traveled extensively in their motorhome, often taking their waverunners to Lake Mead and visiting motocross tracks across the country. Barry's greatest passion was dirt bike racing with his club, Old Timers MX. The "Simonizer" remained a champion well into his 80s. His friends from the club supported him faithfully until his last days.
Barry is survived by his children David (Susan), Dale, and Heather (Karl); his grandchildren Kristin, Scott, Candice, Eric, Charity, Khloe, Maya, Samuel, Zakary, and Liam; and 16 great-grandchildren.
