Obituary

Betty Liu (劉姃姃), a resident of Corona del Mar, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 15, 2023, at 88, after suffering a stroke. Betty was lovingly known as Teacher Liu 劉老師  to her piano students and their parents in southern California,  New Jersey, and Taiwan;  and as Toa-i (大姨) or Aunty Betty to her nieces and nephews.   Betty is survived by her husband Dr. James Yeh, her children Susan Osse, Joseph Lin, Eunice Stennett, Annie Brown, and their spouses, as well as six grandchildren and one great grandson.

Prior to immigrating to the US from Taiwan in 1970 to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, Betty taught the piano and conducted church choirs in Taiwan. Her marriage to Professor James Yeh, a founding member of the Mathematics Department at the UC Irvine, brought her to southern California, where she established the Betty Liu Piano Studio. Her devotion to her students, coupled with her keyboard pedagogy, had won her students numerous awards at competitions. Betty was also active in several music teachers' associations, and served as the president of CAPMT for a term.

Betty was loved not only by her students, but also their parents and her fellow piano teachers.  They fondly remember her as someone kind, generous and warm. She was equally devoted to her children and her extended families in California and throughout the world.  They knew they could always count on Aunty Betty's genuine concern, wise counsel and honesty. A long time member of St. Andrews Presbyterian, Betty's zest for life and her bundle of energy brought much joy and positive impact to those around her.
