Obituary

Chester (Chet) Miller was born in Danbury, Ct on December 2, 1927. At the age of 86, He recently passed over peacefully at the Silverado Memory Care Community in Redondo Beach surrounded by his family. Chet's family is grateful for the loving care that he received during his stay at Silverado and most recently from Hospice.

Chet attended Taft School in Watertown, CT and Yale University where he graduated in 1948. He went on to attend Yale Divinity School and became an ordained minister in 1950. He moved to California in 1970, leaving his position as senior minister at the Wilton Congregational Church to become the minister of the Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes. Chet passionately believed in the equality of all and their right to basic human dignity. He was very active during the civil rights movement and continued to be passionate of ongoing service throughout his life. He was present during Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech. He was an active member of the Rotary Club and fully espoused their principles of service. Chet lived an active life, particularly loving tennis, fishing, baseball and music. He and his wife, Pat, enjoyed their second careers together as financial planners, but always made time to travel, spend time with their family, walk regularly, participate in reading club and attend yoga.

Chet was pre-deceased by his younger brother, Graham (Gray) Miller. He is survived by his adoring and supportive wife, Patricia Taevs-Miller, daughter Sharon Miller and her husband, Mark Columbia, son Christopher Miller and his wife Beverlie, son Anthony Miller, daughter-in-law, Debra Taevs and her husband Igor Malachi, son-in-law, Gregory Taevs and his wife Sakiko, and his grandchildren, Garrett Klippel-Miller, Michael Munch, Adam Columbia, Seth Columbia and Celestine Taevs, his sister-in-law, Susan Miller, his nieces, Pamela Grzybowski, Jane Wolanin, Laura Coleman and their families. He was dearly loved by all of his family who will forever miss the fun and laughter that he brought to every gathering, his masterful story-telling and his unconditional love for all of us.

A celebration of Chet's life will be held at the Palos Verdes Shores Clubhouse at 11:00am Friday September 12th, 2014. 2275 W. 25th St. San Pedro, CA 90732. For more information, please call (310) 547-4403
