Obituary

Diana Rigney Sepulveda passed away at the age of 64 while surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Santa Rosa, CA. She spent 7 years living in Singapore with her family from 1969 to 1976, and graduated from San Marino High School in 1977 upon their return to the US.

She ran track in junior high and high school, excelling in the 100-yard dash and setting a record that stood unbroken for approximately 10 years. In 1978-1979, she placed 3rd in the California State Women's Jet-Ski Competition held in San Francisco Bay! Her first full-time job with the California Agricultural Aircraft Association instilled in her a love of planes. Eventually she settled into her life-long career as an accountant - her famous sense of humor endeared her to her colleagues, earning her the superlative award of "Most Entertaining Emails!"

Diana was a lover of the outdoors, enjoying road trips to national parks and scenic areas. Her favorite place was Doheny State Beach, where you could find her chasing sea birds and hunting for sea glass year-round. She was a meticulous gardener, ensuring that no leaf would rest too long in her garden. She had a green thumb, carefully nurturing a tiny, palm-sized ivy over several years into a huge, healthy cascading backyard plant she lovingly named "Cousin It".

She loved camping with her family, especially at the beach and at Cachuma Lake. In the mornings on camping trips, the family routinely waited patiently for Diana (famously NOT a morning person) to wake up and pour them a fresh cup of her fabulous coffee!

Diana was an avid reader - you would never find her anywhere without her Kindle in hand, reading any chance she got. She loved going to Barnes and Noble and coming home to snuggle under a blanket with her latest book in hand. Usually, reading was followed by a nap - she truly believed naps were underrated!

Her love for animals was well known: she always had a treat ready for all the neighborhood dogs, befriended wild birds in the backyard, regularly helped her good friend with "cat spa" days, and spoiled any pet her daughter ever brought home (including a guinea pig Snickers, bearded dragon Gizmo, and cat Meeko). The local birds loved and trusted her, and you could often see a flock of them clustered around her as she sat on the patio reading, sometimes even eating out of her hand!

From volunteering as an election poll worker, to serving as soccer lines referee for her daughter's youth league, to helping out at silent and live auction events for local charities, everyone knows how much Diana loved people - and how much people loved her. No matter where she was - volunteering, at work, in line at the grocery store, or strolling down the beach, you could count on Diana to strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone and walk away with a new best friend.

Diana's playful personality was infectious - all it took was a silly duck statue, a gnome, or a goofy reindeer and she would light up with joy. She loved the Long Beach Aquarium, Disneyland, rollercoasters, and playing bunco. She was a regular at the Orange County Fair, Pageant of the Masters, the Sawdust Festival, and the outlet stores - often finding excuses to buy small, thoughtful gifts for family whenever she could. She rediscovered her early love of running later in life, proudly completing multiple 5Ks and half marathons. Diana loved rock-and-roll, often blasting Metallica, Tom Petty, George Thorogood, or AC/DC while driving to Barnes & Noble or the beach!

She and her husband enjoyed taking weekend trips to places like Lake Havasu, Palm Springs, and Cape Cod, as well as attending Angel Baseball Games and going to car shows. One of her specialties was making her famous "Fluff Pie", a delicious dessert fiercely and routinely hidden away by anyone who was lucky enough to get one since they never wanted to share!

As everyone who knew her will attest, Diana hated alarm clocks, runny eggs, any grape-flavored candy, and spiders. Conversely, she loved frozen yogurt, Shirley Temples, Smarties, all dark chocolate, Necco Wafers, Iced Teas (especially Thai Iced Tea), crazy weather, and learned to love baseball because her husband does! With all of her running around and packing as much fun as possible into a single day, she was constantly dumping out her purse while yelling frantically "Where are my car keys? I know they're in here somewhere!"

Diana is survived by her husband Tony Sepulveda (Lake Forest, CA); her daughter Ariel Rigney (Portland, OR); her sister Carol Shestag (Seattle, WA); and her wonderful extended Sepulveda family. She is preceded in death by her parents Ulysses (Buck) and Elizabeth (Betsy) Buchanan.

Her wacky sense of humor will be greatly missed. We love you, Diana.
