She was born Dolores Clare Hart on April 12, 1935 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her mother was of German descent; her father of Irish decent. She was the eldest of six children and raised in her grandparent's household on Eggers Street on Troy Hill.
Dee, as she was affectionately called, married in 1953 at eighteen years of age upon graduating high school, to Adrian Johnston.Eventually they made their home in Maryland and together had six children of their own, Cliff, Bruce, Ellen, Barbara, Adrienne and Gregory.
As a family, they lived overseas in Taiwan, Guam and Hong Kong from 1967 until 1979, returning to the United States to reside in Hawaii until 1982.That same year, the family made their final move and permanent residence in Laguna Hills, California.
Dee and Adrian were a business team and over the years worked side by side building their family businesses both overseas and in the United States.Together they built and managed a number of real estate investments, an import/export business, and a manufacturing corporation.
Dee was a wife, mother, grandmother and housewife, known for her love of sociability and keeping up to date and in touch with her people. And she accomplished this in two ways. One, by posting letters and cards for special occasions or simply Thinking of You.And two, by phone after surveying her quick reference list of phone numbers for family and friends, giving preference to those she hadn't spoken to in a while.
Flowers and water were a magnet for Dee.She spent hours in her garden tending her roses, making cuttings to bring indoors to enjoy. And you could find her often, hose in hand, watering everything from the garden down to the patio deck, a life long passion from early childhood that her mother confirmed years ago.
She loved to read, had a passion for European history and current events. She completed every newspaper and magazine cross word puzzle she could find.
Her greatest loves were her grandchildren. She had four, Alexandra, Trevor, Kelsey and Samantha. They, along with Dee's six children, kept vigil by her side during her final hours with prayer and song.
