Dorothy grew up on a farm in Indiana where she learned a hard work ethic. She and all of her siblings graduated from Galveston High School in Indiana.Dorothy is the great grand daughter of George A. Smith, a founder of Howard County, Indiana. After high school, she attended business college and graduated first in her class. It was the ending of World War II and due to her excellent typing and shorthand skills, over 200 words per minute in each subject, the U. S. Government recruited her for post war duty in either Germany or Japan. Dorothy, being a simple farm girl was overwhelmed with the thought of going to these countries where so much strife had just occurred and chose not to go. Dorothy, rather, chose to work at Bryne Kingston and Co. as an administrative assistant. She later worked at Guidelamp a division of General Motors as an administrative assistant.
In 1947, Dorothy began studies at Indiana University at the Kokomo Center Campus. She took courses that included statistical reporting and statistical analysis. She then became a Labor Market Analyst for the State of Indiana. Dorothy was one of four people in the State of Indiana to hold this position, the other three positions where held by men.
Dorothy met Edwin on St Patrick's Day in 1950, later they were married in 1952.They settled and started a family in Anderson, Indiana and later moved to Muncie, Indiana.
Dorothy played organ for the Presbyterian Church in Muncie, Indiana while working full time and raising six children. All six children graduated with degrees including advanced degrees and professional licenses. Dorothy was always available to help with homework. During this time, Dorothy chose to go back to school to continue her studies. She challenged the English course by examination scoring a 100%. This accomplishment had never occurred at Ball State University until Dorothy's perfect challenged testing score.
Dorothy held various administrative positions ending with her first retirement in 1978 from the U.S. Government, Center for Disease Control. One of Dorothy's roles was to prepare the Federal Register for the CDC. This was no small feat as Dorothy completed this task on an electric typewriter that required 16 carbons and not one mistake. Because of Dorothy's excellent administrative skills and knowledge of the English language, she held a top secret security clearance and was responsible for writing and editing final medical research while at the CDC. In 1974, not one to give up, Dorothy completed and received her Bachelor's of Arts Degree from Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, Illinois.
Dorothy and Edwin then moved to Apple Valley, CA where Edwin retired and Dorothy went back to work for the State of California at the Victorville, CA Employment Development Department office. Dorothy officially retired in 1991.
Dorothy's good humor, knowledgeable advice and loving ways will be missed by her family and friends.
