Obituary

Elvia Castillo Jimenez passed on at the age of 89 on July 5, 2018. Shepassed peacefully and in her sleep after battling complications from a stroke that she suffered May 20, 2018 in the city of Laguna Woods, Ca.


Born in 1928, in Medellin, Colombia, She was the oldest daughter of 11 children (9 girls and 2 boys) of Mr. & Mrs. Obdulio and Tulia Jimenez. She spoke of the joy of attending the theater as a child with her father, a treat for her, in town once a week to watch movies on the big screen. A time of no TV and no Internet. She helped raise her eight sisters and two brothers and eventually attended college at the University Medellin. She dreamed of becoming a journalist. During her time as a student, she won an award for writing an essay regarding the role of women in society, the right to vote and the right to be treated as equals. She eventually moved to Baranquilla, Columbia and opened a beauty salon with her sister Gilma following in the tradition of her father's barbershop.


She immigrated to the United States in 1959 and became a US citizen. She was a homemaker, mother, wife, sister, stylist, Nursery Care Manager, Cub Scout Den, Team Mom, Neighborhood Mom, the best breakfast maker in town, and a wonderful human being. She traveled far and wide throughout South America, Europe and the United States. She loved the movies; especially, the big screen.


She is survived by her one and only son Alan Castillo, her grandchild Emma Sophia Castillo and her daughter-in-law Robyn Vanderplate.With many relatives in the United States and Colombia she is survived by her sisters Gilma, Amparo, Margarita, Rosaura, Luz Helena, Betty and Stella.


In life, she married and divorced her one and only husband, Jose Maria Castillo, a Spaniard. She relished the role of a mother and was most proud of the son she created. She believed in the the Holy Catholic Church, revered the Holy Father and his son Jesus Christ.


The Catholic Funeral Mass for Elvia Castillo will be held July 14, 2018 at 9 AM-10 am at:
