Laguna Beach native Francis Quentin Cabang Jr., age 62, died May 13, 2019 of heart failure at Mission Hospital in his hometown.
Known by many as "JR," Francis was born June 1, 1956 in Newport Beach, California to Francis Sr. and Dionisia Cabang. From the start a curious little boy, JR found fascination with words, world history, cars, food and music—notably evident in his skills as an enthusiastic cook and entertaining piano player.
Growing up in his family's business, Royal Hawaiian Charcoal Broiler, JR learned the restaurant trade first-hand and succeeded his father's management when the elder Cabang retired in 1983.
In recent years, JR enjoyed time in his childhood home, keeping close company with family and friends, and never failing to command the piano—and a grateful audience—when occasions called for musical escape and enhancement.
He is survived by his mother, his sisters Marilyn Pannell and Julie Loizides, his brother Rufino, niece Louiza Loizides, nephew Christian Pannell, grand niece Dionisia Pannell, grand nephew Basil Pannell and Goddaughter Kylie Brown.
A rosary and vigil will be held for Francis on Tuesday, May 28, 7:00 p.m. at McCormick & Son Mortuary, 1795 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, where JR took pride in his responsibilities as an usher and parishioner. The church is located at 1042 Temple Terrace in Laguna Beach.
Interment will follow immediately at Melrose Abbey, 2303 S Manchester Ave. in Anaheim.
A Celebration of JR's Life will begin at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 29 at Las Brisas Restaurant, 361 Cliff Drive in Laguna Beach.
