George Arthur Mellevold, born December 18, 1938, Queens, NY, passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from complications related to lung cancer. Born to George and Hedwig Mellevold, he had two sisters Ann Harker and Margaret England, both deceased. George grew up in Hightstown, New Jersey, attended Trenton Catholic High School and nearby met the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Michaeleen(Mickey) Mellevold (née Cirrito).George and Mickey were married in August 27, 1960 and had three children, Christopher, Regina and Beth.
George graduated from St Joseph's University in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in psychology, although thereafter worked in sales and marketing in the materials handling and electronics industries.A move to one electronics company brought George and Mickey to southern California in 1983, first to Long Beach where they lived for 20 years, then to Huntington Beach and, since 2009 Laguna Woods.George earned an MBA from Rutgers University. A self-taught computer wiz, George retrained in information technology and spent the last three years of his career working in IT before retiring in 2004.
George is survived by his wife, Mickey, son Christopher Mellevold and daughter-in-law Juliana, daughter Regina Frey and son-in-law Mark, daughter Beth Rogers and son-in-law Richard, and by grandchildren Damon Rogers, Ryan Rogers, Philip Mellevold, Katherine Rogers and Gillian Frey, and step-grandchildren Jake and Sophia Lillis, and by his beloved pooch Lola.
An avid outdoorsman, George was for most of the 1970's the Scout Master to Boy Scout Troop 55 of Sea Girt, New Jersey. He took his family on summer and holiday camping trips. A surf as well as fresh water trout fisherman, he enjoyed pursuing his hobby on both coasts and in several California streams.George was a woodworker who enjoyed building furniture, wooden games and doll houses and for his granddaughters.He was a lifelong photographer, instilling the love of that art in his son, and during retirement was active in the Laguna Woods Photography Club and enjoyed photography classes through Saddleback College Emeritus Institute.
George was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church. He was on the Worship Team as an usher and was a member of the Men's Club.
Perhaps George's greatest pleasure in life was travelling with Mickey to distant shores.The pair was particularly fond of guided tours with an educational angle. They travelled together to several countries in Europe, Africa and Asia and to many of the states of the US by car, RV, plane, train, canoe and riverboat.
A celebration of life for George will be held Saturday, August 18, 2018 in Laguna Woods.
