Glenn Allen Erb, beloved husband of Tomiko Goto Erb, passed away on September 19, 2013 at the age of 90. He died peacefully in his sleep in the Irvine, CA home he shared with his wife of 34 years, Tomiko Goto Erb. He is survived by his two children, Jo Ann Erb of Brentwood, TN, and Gerald Erb of Indianapolis, IN. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Erika Graves of Los Angeles, CA and Ian Graves of Washington D.C.
Glenn was born in the farming community of Francesville, IN on January 5, 1923 to Herman Erb and Bertha Honegger. He had three sisters and four brothers; he is survived by two siblings, Carol Bucher and Max Erb. When it came time for him to serve his country he was sent to Japan as part of the Occupation Forces, and there his life was to take a dramatic turn when he met his future wife, Fusako Goto. He became a civilian with the U.S. military, studied and became fluent in Japanese, and settled into family life in a typical Japanese community with local Japanese whom he grew to love. In May 1976 he lost his beloved Fusako to breast cancer. He retired from the Civil Service in September 1979 and returned to the U.S., bringing back fond memories of Japan and Fusako's sister Tomiko who became his companion and wife. They settled in a beautiful home in Irvine, CA overlooking the San Juaquin Hills.
Retired life suited Glenn and Tomiko as they travelled throughout the United States, visiting major national parks in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Texas and seeing family in Washington, New Jersey, Indiana, and Tennessee. They especially loved skiing at Big Bear and Lake Tahoe after taking up the sport in their mid-fifties. And when they were at home, Glenn could often be seen renovating or fixing the house or planting bushes and trimming trees, while Tomiko added well-placed flowers in the garden. Glenn was a devoted family man, well-liked for his good humor and kind disposition, and respected by his community for his sense of fairness and strength of character.
Private services will be held on the schooner, the Curlew, at Dana Point Harbor on October 13th. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Glenn's favorite charities, Paralyzed Veterans of America www.pva.org, Boys Town www.boystown.org or the St. Joseph's Indian School www.stjo.org.
