IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Godfrey Mortimer
Walters
April 8, 1939 – January 3, 2023
Godfrey Mortimer Walters, born March 23, 1939, with a registered birth date of April 8, 1939, transitioned to be with his Heavenly Father on January 3, 2023. While Godfrey was born to Frederica Bygrave and Noel Walters in St. Ann, Jamaica, he was raised by his father, Noel Walters in Kingston, Jamaica where he took advantage of his academic pursuits, under the watchful eye of his father, a Kingston police officer. After completing his primary and secondary education, Godfrey pursued his passion as a photographer and enjoyed an outstanding career as a photojournalist. In Jamaica, Godfrey embarked on his career working with Jamaica Broadcasting Company (JBC.). Soon after, Godfrey had an opportunity to expand his experience in cinematography and he relocated to Canada where he worked first in Nova Scotia and later Ontario with the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC).
Godfrey met his future wife, and mother of his four children, Roan McCalla, in Jamaica. When Godfrey relocated to Canada, Roan relocated to New York City to continue her nursing studies and begin her career as a registered nurse. Godfrey proposed to Roan at the top of the Empire State building, New York City, New York. Once married, Godfrey decided to leave his job in Nova Scotia, Canada, emigrated to the United States, residing first in Queens, New York, and later relocating to Hartford Connecticut, after accepting a job with CBS Affiliate, WFSB Channel 3 in Hartford, Connecticut. Godfrey worked as a news photographer with WFSB Channel 3 for over thirty-four years!
During his tenure with WFSB, Godfrey volunteered for various assignments with CBS News, including an overseas assignment to Grenada where Godfrey provided much of the CBS news coverage of the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada. He enjoyed working with several reporters and journalists, including Gayle King during his tenure with WFSB News. Godfrey retired from WFSB in the late 1990s and later relocated to El Mirage, Arizona to be closer to his first-born daughter, Darice Michelle. Godfrey enjoyed eighteen years of retirement in El Mirage, Arizona, and relocated to Lake Forest, California in June 2021 to be closer to two of his children, Darice Michelle and Jennifer Marcella.
Godfrey was fond of the arts, particularly classical music and he encouraged each of his four children to pursue interests in music. Godfrey was also an ardent audiophile, chess player, tennis player, and world-traveler. He loved poetry, gardening, and had a passion for roses and hummingbirds! But first and foremost, Godfrey was especially proud of his four children and three grandchildren.
Godfrey is survived by his children; Darice Michelle, Lesley Maureen, Godfrey Marc, and Jennifer Marcella, and his grandchildren; Jasmin, Joshua, and Eden. He will be missed by his family, including his former spouse Roan, his siblings; Reitta, Owen, Assad, Dale, his nieces and nephews, the Orr family, and lifelong friends. His family takes comfort that he has transitioned and has now joined his beloved sister, Clover, who passed away in 2019.
A private memorial for Godfrey Mortimer Walters will take place on Friday, January 27, 2023, 1:00pm at El Toro Memorial Park, Lake Forest, CA.
