Obituary
Known lovingly to everyone as Grandmama, Aida Matilde Cabrera was born on April 30, 1932.Growing up in Bolivia, she was known as Maty. Grandmama passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 3rd, 2019.
Born to Antonia Martinez and Luis Cabrera, Maty is the eldest of eight children.Her siblings are Edmundo, Eduardo, Dora, Lola, Luis, Jorge, Ruben and Teresa. She moved to the US in the Spring of 1971 with her children - Susy, Benjamin and Marina - making California her home.
In 1991, she became a grandmother to her only granddaughter Emily - born to Susy and her husband Rob.In 1992, they welcomed their son, Hunter. Shortly after, Grandmama moved to Laguna Hills to be closer to her grandkids. In 2006, her son Benjamin and wife Connie-Alice welcomed their first son Liam; their second son Theo was born in 2010. Grandmama's pride and joy were her 4 grandkids.
Grandmama loved to travel, she often ventured on her own to visit friends in Germany and family in Brazil and Bolivia. Gardening, reading, cooking and watching sports were her passions. She enjoyed the love and company of her many pets, including her dogs - Jake, Patch, Joey, Kona and Luna, her chickens - Daisy, Petunia and Violet, Clover the rooster, Star the Parrot, Rosita the fish and her grand dog - Hazel.She really enjoyed feeding her dogs sliced banana with a fork each morning. Grandmama was also an incredible artist. She had many talents including creating ceramics, gorgeous porcelain dolls and beautiful pearl necklaces. In recent years she became an avid puzzler.
Grandmama loved to cook, entertain and enjoy time with family and friends. In the last 4 years, Cindy and Susana - her loving caregivers, became her closest friends. We are forever grateful for their patience and devotion to her health and happiness. Grandmama will always be remembered as a generous and loving lady with an incredible sense of style and a hilarious set of opinions.
Services will be held Saturday, March 30, 2019, 1:00 p.m. at McCormick & Son Mortuaries, 1795 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach CA 92651.Reception to follow.
