Helen Elizabeth Campbell, born March 28, 1925 in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, passed away suddenly on December 8, 2019 in Dana Point, CA, where she lived with her husband Douglas for the past 21 years.
Born to Ellen and Loren Daggett, she was the youngest of five and grew up on an apple orchard.She was very outgoing and vivacious. She was also a self-taught pianist and by age 16 was already playing in a few local dance bands.She finished high school in Salmon Arm and then went to Victoria where she attended Royal Business College and worked at the Parliament Buildings.
It was shortly after this the she met a handsome RCAF officer, Douglas Campbell, from New York City, and they were married in the First United Church in Victoria in 1945.They lived in Montreal for a few years while Douglas finished getting his Chemical Engineering degree at McGill University.They then moved to Brooklyn, NY, and Helen got a secretarial job on Wall Street.She was beloved by her bosses and relished her time as a working woman.
Eventually they moved to Westfield, NJ, with their young daughter Ellen where they lived for over 40 years.Helen joined the Service League, did hospital volunteer work and made many good friends.She loved entertaining, dinner parties, music and dancing.She and Doug were members of Echo Lake Country Club where they enjoyed many fun evenings with their friends.They also travelled extensively visiting Europe, Russia, South America, and of course, many trips back to Salmon Arm in the summers.She was a cut-throat bridge player and also played tennis into her 80's.
She and Doug moved to a beachside neighborhood in Dana Point Ca, in 1998 to be near her daughter Ellen, son-in-law, Bruce and grandson Cameron.She will be dearly missed by her husband, Doug, Ellen, Bruce and Cameron, as well as her many nieces and nephews and little dog Thumper.
