Jack King
(John H. Glover King)
Jack (Glover) King was born on June 3, 1928 and passed away quietly, in his sleep, on Sunday morning, August 9, 2015 at the age of 87. Jack, a lifelong bachelor is survived by his twin brother, Tom (William Thomas (Glover) King), Tom's wife, Nancy and 5 nieces & nephews, 9 great nieces & nephews as well as 10 great-great nieces and nephews, and 1 great-great-great niece, and as he would say his "21,000" friends in and around Laguna Beach. Laguna Beach was Jack's home for 70 years. He retired at age 62 from almost 40 years working as a stockman at Bushards' Pharmacy.
Webster's dictionary defines POSITIVITY as the quality or state of being positive and JOY as a source or cause of great happiness: something or someone that gives joy to someone and finally LOVE as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. To have known Jack King - the King of Laguna Beach or "Labeana Guch" as he affectionately called it, was to have known Positivity, Joy and Love.
Jack was a true southern gentleman raised in Charleston, South Carolina. He spent his young childhood with his parents Margaret and Heyward and twin brother Tom on a farm that his father managed in Walterboro, South Carolina, just outside of Charleston. All things changed for Jack at the age of 6, when he lost his father in a farm accident. This was during the depression and times were hard, Jack along with his brother then went to reside in the Charleston Orphan House at the age of 9. To many children this would have been a difficult thing, but to know Jack, then lovingly
nicknamed 'Chick-Chick' by the other children, it was a welcomed experience and a place of love and happiness. During his stay at the Orphanage he learned discipline, how to get along with others, grooming, manners, and Christian values, as well as how to share in the workload of living together in a large home/dorm setting. Jack attended school, had special tutoring and most important in his life, was taught lessons from the Bible.
At age sixteen, Jack traveled via train, along with his brother Tom, to Laguna Beach to join his newly remarried mother and stepfather, where at his Mother's request, Jack took his stepfather's last name of King.
Jack remained rooted in his love of all things southern – Magnolia trees, Spanish moss, pitched roofs, fried chicken, butter beans, cornbread and of course his sweet tea. He may have grown up in Charleston and then worked at Bushards' for 40 years but as we all know, his real job was PR man for the town of Laguna Beach which he dearly loved. He truly did have thousands of friends and couldn't walk down a street in Laguna without being greeted by every walk of life – Jack gave of himself freely and loved all. He was very active in his church as well as active in his community participating many years in the city's parade, donating his time backstage at the Pageant of the Masters for over 15 years and was a daily regular at the Senior Center. But his greatest pleasure was the countless hours he spent down on 'his bench' on main beach in front of the lifeguard tower, in his signature beach hat and sunglasses, visiting with all his friends and sharing of himself and his 'stories'. He cherished the times spent with family and loved taking many trips back to his beloved Charleston. Not only
did Jack travel to Charleston with his Mother and then after retirement with his brother but to other locations, including Israel and Rome. Jack undoubtedly was blessed with the gift of gab, had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh but his true gift was that of an intent listener and an understanding heart. Jack clearly understood adversity and smiled right back – he will be truly missed by all.
Services for Jack will be held at McCormick and Sons located in Laguna Woods on Friday, August 21st (viewing 11:30-12:30 pm followed by a Chapel service 12:30-1:30 pm). A memorial service will also be held at this church – Kingsfield Church located in Aliso Viejo on Saturday, September 12th at 9:30-11:00 am.
