James Everett Updike was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on May 8, 1947, and died unexpectedly on May 4, 2021. Jim lived in Laguna Woods, California with his wife Sharon.
Jim was a veteran of the Vietnam War, in which he served as a Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970, and was awarded a Purple Heart and Navy Commendation with Combat "V". He worked his entire career in the financial industries, retiring in 2015 as CEO of Honda Federal Credit Union. He was proud of his accomplishments as a leader during his career, and building great teams was what he loved best. He was a skilled speaker, and enjoyed the motivational aspects that came with his role.
Jim's post-retirement volunteerism and hobbies did not leave him idle. He was an active member of the American Legion, served as President of the Catalina Marine Society, and worked avidly for the American Legion Yacht Club, helping to found the Dive and Snorkeling Club. An enthusiastic sailor, scuba diver, and a wine connoisseur, Jim made many friends along the way. Jim was known for his kind and wise counsel to those many friends, though very private himself. Jim will be intensely missed by his family and friends, and we are deeply saddened he chose to leave us too soon.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife Sharon of 35 years, his children Jacqueline, James, and Kathryn, his grandchildren Jake, Leilani, and Vera, as well as his siblings Kathy, Francie, and Michael.
