Obituary

Jane Taylor Black, born March 13, 1926, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 25, 2024. Jane was born in San Jacinto, California to Edythe and Roscoe Taylor. Jane's first name was Theresa, but she always went by Jane. Jane had one sibling, an older brother, Wayne, who passed away in 2003.

Jane met her first love, Robert Clinton Black, ("Bob") in at a social held at Ryan Field, in Hemet where Bob was a pilot in the Air Force. After a brief courtship, (it was war time after all), Bob and Jane were married in September of 1946 in Riverside, California.

Following her graduation from San Jacinto High School, Jane trained to become a Registered Nurse at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. In 1947, following Bob's graduation from UCLA, Bob and Jane moved to Laguna Beach, where Bob opened his CPA practice. Jane worked as a nurse for a family doctor in South Laguna until their son, Robert C. Black, Jr. ("Bobby") was born. Later, Jane assisted Bob in his CPA office, especially during tax seasons. Jane maintained her nursing certification for many years and was always very proud to have been a nurse.

Bob and Jane lived a full life in Laguna. They had a great group of good friends and enjoyed frequent dinners and cocktail parties. Jane was a talented cook and hostess. Her menus were well thought out and her table was always set just so, complete with a coordinating flower arrangement that she composed herself. Jane had an impressive collection of cookbooks that she poured over in preparation for her dinner parties. When their son, Bobby, married Robin in 1979, their wedding reception was held at Bob and Jane's backyard in Laguna. Jane cooked a wonderful spread of delicious Mexican food for the buffet. Not only did Jane cook the reception fare, but she also sewed her own beautiful dress for the wedding and helped create Robin's wedding dress, by meticulously sewing on hundreds of tiny seed pearls.

Bob and Jane stayed busy enjoying traveling, playing bridge and golf, but were never too busy to enjoy their granddaughters, Taylor and Tory. Bob and Jane often volunteered to babysit the girls over long weekends to allow Bobby and Robin time away. One of Jane's favorite pastimes was shopping, and she was a gifted bargain hunter! Jane had a closet full of clothing and her real passion-shoes! Her impressive shoe collection was very organized with descriptions of each pair on each shoe box for easy reference. Jane delighted in scouring the stores for Taylor and Tory's holiday dresses, worthy of the inevitable holiday photos.

Bob and Jane moved to Laguna Niguel in 1994. Following Bob's diagnosis of Alzheimer's, Jane lovingly cared for Bob. It was Jane's goal to keep Bob at home until the end, and she was able to do that with the help of a devoted caregiver. After 53 years of marriage, Bob passed away in July 2004.

In 2007, Jane was blessed to marry Hal Carpenter, who had also lost his wife to Alzheimer's. Hal was a wonderful husband to Jane and a great stepfather, grandfather, and great grandfather to Taylor and Frank's two children, Harrison and Holland Hill, and Tory and Kyles's son, Finn Smithe. Hal and Jane enjoyed traveling together, playing bridge, and regularly attending musical performances. After 16 years of marriage, Hal passed away from Parkinson's on June 13, 2023. He was missed terribly by Jane and the whole family. Jane was truly blessed to have two wonderful husbands. (She clearly knew how to pick good ones.)

Jane will be remembered for her devotion and great love of her family. She frequently expressed how grateful she was to have such a loving family. Jane will be laid to rest next to her husband, Robert C. Black, at El Toro Memorial Park, where her family will hold a private gathering.
