Obituary

Jean Galil Hebri was born on June 1st, 1935 in Cairo, Egypt to his parents Galil George Hebri and Adele Nassar. He had a beloved younger brother, Raymond Hebri, who was his very best friend.

Johnny, as he was affectionately called, passed away on June 27th, 2016, at the age of 81, surrounded by his family in his home in Laguna Niguel. He is survived by his wife Lucienne, his children Karen and Peter, and his grandson Christian. As well as his step daughter Mary Beshay, son-in-law Magued, and grandson Neil.

Johnny grew up in Heliopolis, a suburb of Cairo, Egypt. In his youth, he served as the captain of his school soccer team. This experience created a love for the sport which followed him throughout his entire life. He loved watching soccer games on TV, especially when his favorite team Barcelona was playing. As a young man, Johnny loved to be surrounded by family and friends, especially at his favorite hangout, the local Cafe Amphitrion in Cairo. This love of being surrounded by loved ones was Johnny's hallmark and the reason why so many people love him.

In 1968, in order to make a new life for themselves, Johnny moved to California with his mother and joined his brother Raymond in Los Angeles. Johnny had very little money when he arrived, he found employment with his brother Raymond and put himself through school, eventually receiving his degree in mechanical engineering from the California Polytechnic University in Pomona. After graduating, Johnny quickly found work in piping design working for the United States Navy at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Johnny was credited with being instrumental in the design and implementation of a highly effective fire suppression system that was quickly adopted on numerous naval vessels. His career spanned 25 years before his retirement in 1997.

During his retirement, Johnny spent much of his time in the garden tending to his fruit trees, tomato plants, grape vines, and mint. His wife Lucy would regularly make wara enab with the grape leaves he had harvested for her. He took great pride in knowing that his family enjoyed the fruits of his efforts.

Johnny was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. But most importantly, he was a genuine, polite, and kind person to everyone. He was a wonderful listener, who possessed an equally wonderful sense of humor. He was sensitive, caring, and loving, and enjoyed nothing more in life than to be at home surrounded by the affection of those he loved most.

Johnny was an exceptional human being and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Everyone is invited to a Celebration of Johnny's Life on July 11th, 2016. For further information please see below.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
