On 22 November 2022, Jeanne-Marie Harvey passed away peacefully at home at an age that those of you who knew her, knew she never would disclose.
Jeannie had two constants throughout her life – a love for travel, and the military and its lifestyle. Born into an Army family, she lived in and visited more places by the time she was in high school than many people do in their entire life. After high school in Paris, France, and college in Monterey, California, Jeannie continued her love for travel living in Texas, Boston, San Francisco, finally ending up back in Monterey where she met her husband, Ben, and renewed her love of all things military, becoming an active Army wife. After leaving Monterey and spending time in Kentucky, Germany, Virginia, and Germany again, Jeannie finally settled in southern California till the end of her life. An avid history buff, Jeannie witnessed such events as the establishment of the Berlin Wall while living in France and the fall of the Berlin Wall some 30 years later while living in Germany. As a travel buff, she visited several countries in northern Africa, vacationed throughout Europe, and the traveled in the US. She was also an avid reader of history particularly books about World War II and was known to her friends as the biggest repository of little know and useless facts of anyone they ever knew.
As a result of living in many varied places, Jeannie had a wealth of wonderful and humorous stories of growing up around the US and in France. As an adult, Jeannie's favorite home was Frankfurt, Germany, where she once tested the limits of how much crystal a single person could purchase in one trip to Nachtmann's. In case anyone is wondering, it's a lot.
Jeannie was the source of many colorful phrases such as "Well, people in hell want ice water", but she also provided good advice such as don't gossip, (sometimes tough to follow), invest in good clothing (quite easy to follow), and never share recipes or else you'll see your dish at the next pot luck (for those of you who want it, her daughter, Courtenay, can track down that pasta salad recipe for you).
Reflecting on Jeannie as a wife, while she was the most devoted, loving, caring, and giving person a husband could ask for, she always kept her husband on the straight and narrow but in a helpful and suggestive way. As a mother, Courtenay, said, "She was my mom and my friend. She encouraged me ("Study hard, get a good job"), but also kept me grounded ("If I hear one more story about how wonderful you are, I'm going to throw up"). She was my shopping buddy and fashion critic ("You're wearing THOSE shoes?!"). She had impeccable taste in everything and knew more about etiquette than Emily Post. I look so much like her, and if anyone were to suggest I was turning into my mother, I'd take it as one of the highest compliments I've ever been offered."
Jeannie is survived by her husband of 49 years, Ben, her son Scott Miller, her daughter Courtenay Jensen, her grandsons Alejandro Miller and Clark Jensen, and her brothers Lance Astrella and Kevin Astrella.
