Obituary

Joan Beverly Adams passed away peacefully on the morning of October 20, 2023, in Mission Viejo, California from natural causes. She was 90 years old at the time of her passing and was living with her husband, Thomas M. Adams ("Tom"), in Aliso Viejo, California. They lived together with their son, David Adams, and his wife, Young Mi.

Joan was born on December 26, 1932, to parents, Johnny B. and Bertha Sathre in Austin, Minnesota. She was the eighth of nine children with her siblings (and their spouses) being Harvey (Alice) Sathre, Paul (Alice) Sathre, Helen (Byron) Huseby, Dorothy (Sparky) Bellrichard, Maynard (Joanne) Sathre, Donna (TJ) Williams, Bill (Morna) Sathre, and Ann (Gary) Eppen. At the time of her passing, Joan was survived by her sister Ann with all her other siblings having predeceased her.

Joan and Tom were married in Austin, Minnesota on November 1, 1952. Their honeymoon was spent driving from Minnesota to Huntington Park, California where they looked to start their family together. They soon purchased a new home in Whittier, California where they raised their four children. They retired and spent their retirement years in Boulder City, Nevada where Joan spent many days and evenings sitting on her deck that overlooked Lake Mead. Eventually they moved back to California to live with their son David and his family.

Family was very important to Joan, and she loved them. She and her husband Tom raised four children starting with daughter Dorothy (Eric) Price, son Thomas ("Tommy") Adams, daughter Barbara (Candelario) Molina, and son David (Young Mi) Adams. She loved her grandchildren (and their spouses); Mark (Janet) Price, Jennifer Price, April (Aaron) Orozco, David Molina, Melissa (Daniel) Tobiassen, Young Jun (Jennifer) Choi, June Choi, and Sarah (Angel) Adams. While her children and her grandchildren brough her a lot of joy over the years, nothing seemed to bring a smile to her face or more joy than seeing her eleven great-grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by her son Tommy and her son-in-law Candelario ("Candy") Molina.

During her spare time, Joan enjoyed bowling and attending her son's Little League baseball games. At those games, she could sometimes be heard from the stands when she did not agree with an umpire's call. She was a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and would spend time listening to them on the radio. She worked as a room mother in her children's classrooms and would sometimes help with the Girl Scouts. She was active in the PTA and even served as PTA President at one point during her involvement. There are a lot of memories of Joan and many impromptu poker nights with their neighbors. At those poker nights, the men would play poker and the women would play Tripoly, but Joan was usually found at the poker table with the men.

One of Joan's passions was traveling with her husband Tom and their family, but they spent most of their travels with their good friends of seventy years Dick and Betty Reeves. The mode of transportation for her travels did not matter to Joan as she would travel by train, place, automobile, or cruise ship. During her lifetime, she took a cruise to Alaska and cruised through the Mississippi River on a paddle wheel boat. Some of her other travels included touring the New England states to see the colors of their Fall foliage and the Southern states to tour the plantations. There were countless trips to Minnesota to spend time with her large family that included a handful of family reunions.

During her retirement years, Joan found peace spending evenings with Tom, watching the night skies from their boat on Lake Mead while she sipped her Vodka Gimlet. Countless days and evenings were spent sitting on her porch in Boulder City, watching the quail, roadrunners, and hummingbirds. Her favorite animal though had to be horses. During her ninety years of life and with all her travels, there were two trips that she did not make. One was a trip to Louisville, Kentucky during the first weekend of May for the Kentucky Derby and the other was a trip to Norway so she could celebrate her Norwegian heritage that she was extremely proud of.

Joan will be missed by so many, but we should all find comfort in the fact that her time here was spent making memories doing the things she loved with those that she loved.
