IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Joseph
Chiumento
March 17, 1943 – March 4, 2025
In loving memory, we honor the life and legacy of John Joseph Chiumento, a man who was truly larger than life. John peacefully passed away in Orange County, California, at the age of 81. Born on Saint Patrick's Day in Paterson, New Jersey, to Jenny Blanche Porter and Dominick Chiumento, and raised in Dansville, New York, John's life was a remarkable journey of service, adventure, and joy.
John's commanding presence was matched by his generosity, a voice that could easily fill any room and a contagious robust laugh. As a child, John was known for his spirited nature and a penchant for playing practical jokes, including rigging his high school teacher's chair to explode (the teacher wasn't hurt, but knew John had orchestrated the prank so he hung John out the window by his feet). He cultivated a love for the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Giants, and after moving to Camp Pendleton with the Navy, he passionately supported the San Diego Padres and Chargers.
A proud Navy Corpsman, John dedicated 28 years to serving his country with valor, loyalty, and distinction, which included tours in Vietnam and Japan. He heroically faced danger to save many lives which earned him numerous commendations including the Purple Heart, Air Medal with Gold Star, and Combat Action Ribbon. John also survived being shot down while in a helicopter and was shot in the shoulder by an enemy combatant while in Viet Nam.
Following his military career, John continued his life of service in roles with the State of California and San Diego County. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Vets (DAV) and contributed generously to various charities, especially his favorites including Paralyzed Veterans of America, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Make a Wish Foundation, and the ASPCA.
John's personal life was filled with the joys of horse racing, golf, and poker. He was an outstanding handicapper of thoroughbred racing, winning many sizeable bets and frequently being asked for his selections. His St. Patty's day luck prevailed when he won a Range Rover in a casino raffle in Reno. He was an avid reader, enjoying books on military history, espionage, and conspiracy theories.
Residing in Capistrano Beach, California, John was the life of any gathering, always ready to have a beer or a lemon drop martini and socialize with family and friends. John also had a special gift of being able to converse with anyone so he made new friends easily. He was an excellent dancer, having been taught by his mother while in high school and was often approached by women to dance in his younger days.
John is lovingly remembered by his wife, Mona; his children, John Chiumento Jr. (Kara) and Kristin Casella (Andy); his bonus daughters, Samantha Moss (David) and Jennifer Cheo (Patrick); his brother, Dominick (Georganne); his adored grandchildren, Ashley, Christopher, Paige, Ethan, Spencer, and Natalie; nephews Dominick (Elaine), Dylan (Abbie), and Ryan; niece Julie; and the many friends he made throughout his life.
John's legacy of courage, loyalty, generosity and laughter lives on in the hearts of all who knew him and will continue to inspire and influence those who loved him.
He will be interred with full military honors at Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego.
