Obituary

John Robert Fleming of Huntington Beach, California, passed away on June 11, 2020 after a brief illness. He was 90.

John was born on November 27,1929, in Decatur, Illinois. He was the only child of Charles and Jennie Fleming. John and his parents moved to Storm Lake, Iowa when John was young and John continued to live in Storm Lake until he moved to California as a young adult. He and his parents lived in a small farmhouse, with only one bedroom and without any indoor plumbing. They farmed seed corn and soybeans on 80 acres of land.John graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1947, one of only 8 members of that year's graduating class.

In 1952, John moved to Long Beach where he joined the Belmont Heights Methodist Church and shortly thereafter met the love of his life, Ruth Byers, in the church's young adult group. John and Ruth married in 1954.

A few years later, John began working for Proctor and Gamble at the plant that was then located in the Long Beach Harbor. Daughter Kathy arrived in 1957 and son Doug arrived in 1962. The family moved to Huntington Beach in 1966 where John continued to live until his death. Following his retirement from Proctor and Gamble after 30 years, John worked in a small knife shop in South Coast Plaza, volunteered with the Second Harvest Food Bank in Irvine, and spent almost 20 years volunteering in the Cancer Center at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. John and Ruth enjoyed traveling together and were active in Community United Methodist Church in Huntington Beach where they were long-time members.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth, his parents Charles and Jennie Fleming, and his wife's sister and brother-in-law, Mary and John Stevens.

John is survived by his daughter Kathy Fleming and her son Matthew; his son and daughter-in-law Doug and Terri Fleming, their daughter and son-in-law Hailee and Jacob Repko and their children Harper, Hudson, and Judah Repko; and his nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be laid to rest on June 23 at El Toro Memorial Park following a private ceremony.
