Dr. John Glenn Hazen
October 3, 1934 – May 15, 2025

Dr. John Glenn Hazen passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior, leaving behind a legacy of tireless dedication to his faith, family, friends and profession. Born on October 3, 1934, in Ottumwa, Iowa to Glenn and Virginia Mae Hatch Hazen, John was raised with the values of humility, hard work, and faith—principles that would guide him throughout his life.

John followed his beloved sister Ginni to the University of Iowa, where he earned both his bachelor's and medical degrees and became a proud Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity brother. A lifelong Hawkeye fan, his passion for Iowa sports, both men's and women's, never waned—his dedication to the black and gold was a constant source of joy and community for him.

His enthusiasm for Hawkeyes sports first brought him to California, as he and some fraternity brothers took a road trip to the 1957 Rose Bowl to watch Iowa defeat Oregon State. That trip planted a seed, and after completing medical school, John moved west to Los Angeles, where he completed his internship and residency at LA County Hospital through USC. He would go on to become board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Oncology, and was among the first to participate in USC's fledging oncology fellowship program.

In 1960, while at LA County Hospital, a fateful elevator ride changed his life forever. When the doors opened, John caught sight of a radiant young nursing student named Delores Albright—and from that moment forward, his heart belonged to her. They married on Christmas night in 1966 in Battle Creek, Michigan, beginning a marriage marked by deep faith, mutual admiration, and an unwavering partnership in service. Their bond of over 58 years was one of true love, friendship, and shared purpose. Together, they offered Christian care and compassion to others with their complementary talents and generous hearts.

After serving his country through the Public Health Service as a medical researcher at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, John and Dee settled in Monarch Beach, California. There, John began his long and impactful career in private practice as he and Dee welcomed their four children. He was revered not only as a brilliant diagnostician but also as a deeply compassionate physician—someone who walked with patients and families through the fear and uncertainty of cancer. His empathy and wisdom left lasting impressions; it was common for people across Orange County, upon hearing the name Hazen, to ask if we were related to the Dr. Hazen—always followed by a heartfelt story of gratitude for his care.

After over 40 years in medicine, John retired and found joy in his many interests: golf, coin collecting, classic cars, church involvement, cheering on the Hawkeyes, and above all, spending cherished time with his beloved wife. John and Dee enjoyed many adventures together, traveling widely and making treasured memories with family and friends.

John's greatest pride and joy came from being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He leaves behind his wife, Reverend Delores Albright Hazen, who continues to look forward to their joyful reunion at Christ's return; his children Tracy Hazen (Tom DePriest), Bob Hazen (Beth), Sara Hazen, and Jenny Hazen (Jaime Saleta); and grandchildren Alex, Abby, and Cade Hazen. He is also remembered lovingly by his nieces, nephews, and countless friends whose lives he touched. All are welcome to attend John's memorial to be held on Saturday, June 7 at 11:00am at San Clemente Presbyterian Church.

John Hazen was a man of deep faith, profound humility, and unwavering character. His life was defined by quiet service and steadfast love. As his favorite poet Robert Frost once wrote, John took the "road less travelled" and John's life "has made all the difference."
