John "Mac" McCarthy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, longtime educator, and head wrestling coach lost his battle to brain cancer on October 11, 2018 in Laguna Hills surrounded by family. He was born on February 13, 1943. He grew up in Manchester, Iowa and attended the University of Iowa, where he also wrestled. He received his Master of Science from Bemidji State University in Minnesota. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, serving 2 years in the Vietnam War and 20 years in the reserves. He taught and coached wrestling at Magnolia High School for 37 years. In 2012, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He loved Bruce Springsteen and Iowa Hawkeyes football. He was hardworking, dedicated, and always had a smile on his face. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carla McCarthy. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their daughter, Megan Larkins, his son, Shane McCarthy, daughter, Heather Cavazos, and his step-daughters, Tina Mueller and Nikki Mjelde.Also, his 9 grandchildren, Ashley, Amanda, Vincent, Jake, Owen, Ava, Justin, Trey, and Madelyn Rose and his brother, Tom McCarthy. His wishes were for no services, to be cremated, and his ashes spread in his hometown of Manchester, Iowa.
