Obituary

Josephine Marie Harrington passed away peacefully with her children by her side on June 19, 2024, at the age of 89.  She was born September 1, 1934, to Josephine (Bosco) and Antonio Cangemi in Lansing, Michigan, where she was raised with her older sisters, Vicenzena, Mary and Joanna, and her older brother, Vito.

After high school, Josephine began working in Lansing, Michigan, but after a vacation to Los Angeles to visit her sister, Joanna, and her brother-in-law, Bill, she was smitten with sunny Southern California and made the move out west to begin a new life.  She landed a job as a secretary in the aerospace industry with System Development Corporation (SDC) in Santa Monica, California, where she eventually met her beloved husband, Toby.  They were married in 1961 and eventually moved to Northridge, California, where they raised their four children.

Josephine spent the next 30 years raising her children, but once all of them were old enough to fend for themselves, she decided to go back to work.  She took and passed the California real estate exam and spent over thirty-five years as a real estate agent, first working in the Northridge area and subsequently in Palm Desert, California, where she and Toby moved to in retirement.

Josephine's health began to decline in her late 80's.  She and Toby left Palm Desert in 2021 for assisted living in Laguna Niguel, California, where she was fortunate to be in close proximity to her daughters.

Josephine enjoyed many things in life but she was particularly fond of her Sicilian heritage.  She was bilingual and could often be heard speaking Italian to her mother, brother and sisters.  While her children were young, she would frequently say "Andiamo!" while gathering her young ones for an outing.  She was a member of her local Italian-American club and chaired the organization one year.  She was a phenomenal cook (although she always professed to not liking cooking) and could make authentic Italian dishes, like lasagna, pasta with cauliflower (which was world class), and others that were impossible to duplicate.

Of all the loves in her life, though, none were more precious to her than her husband and children.

Josephine is survived by her son Irvin C. "Todd" Harrington, III of Agoura Hills, California; her son Steven Harrington of Oak Park, California; her daughter Julie (Harrington) Giffin of Laguna Niguel, California; and her daughter Jennifer (Harrington) Nahas of Laguna Beach, California; as well as eight grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by Irvin C. "Toby" Harrington, Jr., her loving husband of 62 years; her parents; two brothers; and a sister.
