June Rose Petry was born on June 25, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio. She passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, July 5, 2020, at the age of 93. Born to Flora Rose and Robert Charles Stuber, she had three siblings, including Linda, her lifelong friend and confidant. In 1944, she moved to Long Beach, California and met James "Pete" Petry. The two were married on March 6, 1948 and started a family not long after. They had two sons, Robert and Thomas, who both served in the U.S. Military.
They raised their family in Whittier, CA where she worked as a manager for the State Unemployment Office for many years. Ten wonderful years were spent in San Clemente, right on the beach, fulfilling a dream they had to be seaside. The many photographs of the sunset in their home prove how much they loved this season of their lives. After she retired, she volunteered at both the San Clemente and El Toro Friends of the Library bookstores. She always had a love of books and reading so her time at the library brought her great happiness. Each year, Pete and June would road trip up the coast to Point Lobos, CA, stopping at familiar hotels and restaurants along the way. Time near the ocean was always a favorite for both of them.
June and Pete navigated through all of life's mountains and valleys by each other's side, including the death of their two sons, Robert and Thomas. Even after 50 years of marriage, Pete would write love notes to June on her birthday or any given day. They loved each other in a quiet and profound way, happy with their routines, and together every day. After almost 64 years of marriage, on January 14, 2011, Pete passed and June entered a new season of life alone. Much to everyone's surprise, June rose to the occasion- living alone and learning many new things (like putting gas in the car for the first time). She continued to work in her garden, a skill she passed on to many of her family members. The family would visit her regularly to chat and enjoy a scoop of orange sherbert or one of her famous cookies. She created new routines for herself to fill her days, listening to the radio, and doing plenty of reading.
June is survived by her grandchildren, Donald James and Marissa Sutton, including her great-grandchildren, Abel and Colin. Her sister, Linda Rohr, and her nieces, Laura & Julie, her nephew Mike, and their families.
In lieu of a memorial service, the family will travel to Point Lobos to spread both June and Pete's ashes at sea in the town they loved to visit each year.
The tide recedes but leaves behind
Bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle warmth
Still lingers on the land.
The music stops, yet echoes on
In sweet, soulful refrains.
For every joy that passes,
Something beautiful remains.
