Obituary

Karen Sue O'Meara (Dewalt) passed away on May 14, 2022 in Mission Viejo, California at the age of 75. She was born in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania outside of Pittsburgh on October 26, 1946 to Cheerful and Emmett Riggin. She spent most of her life in Berks County, Pennsylvania and lived in Shillington, Wyomissing, Mohnton before moving to Mission Viejo in 2015.

Karen graduated from Frazier High School in Perryopolis in 1964. She studied library science at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a degree in library science in 1968. She received her M.S. in Educational Technology from Lehigh University in 1987 and her EdD in School Administration and Leadership from Widener University in 1999.

Her commitment to children and education was unwavering for her entire career. She began her career as librarian at Muhlenberg High School in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1968. She switched to an administration position at Twin Valley High School in 1989 and reached the position of Assistant Superintendent of Oley Valley School District in Oley, Pennsylvania. She retired from education in 2004.

Karen loved golfing, travel, gardening and walks with her beloved poodle Riley. Ever the optimist, Karen never failed to light up a room with her presence. She met the love of her life, Michael O'Meara, in 2015. Michael and Karen married in 2020.

She was preceded in death by her mother Cheerful, her father Emmett, and her brothers William and Edward Hager.

She is survived by her husband Michael O'Meara, son Kevin Dewalt and daughter-in-law Leda Chong, son Craig Dewalt and daughter-in-law Chi Dewalt, sister Constance Buttomer and brother-in-law Michael Buttomer, grandchildren Tyler and Kate Dewalt, nephews David and Michael Buttomer, nephew William Hager and niece Angela Hager.
