Katherine Louise Weber, born May 20, 1915, peacefully passed away at the
age of 98 in her home on July 1, 2013. Kay or Katie, many called her, is
survived by six of her eight children: Lee and Donna Weber of Boise,
Idaho, MaryAnn and Mike Foster of Laguna Niguel, CA, Diane and Larry
Hellhake of Eagle, Idaho, Peggy and Stan Belitz of Huntington Beach, CA,
Paul and Linda Weber of Laguna Niguel, CA, and Patti and Kevin McCarthy of
Laguna Niguel, CA. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Merrifield
of Overland Park, Kansas, her son-in-law, Fred Tarnay of Orange, CA, and
her beloved caregiver of nine years, Leng Lazarte. Kay was also blessed
with 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 10
great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, John Weber,
her eldest son, Johnny Weber and his wife Saundra, her eldest daughter,
Sharon Tarnay, and her brother, Jack Whelan.
Kay was born in Santa Monica, CA, the oldest of three children. Her
parents were Dr. William Whelan and Matilda Hoffman. She met her husband,
John, at Santa Monica High School and they were married on February 12,
1936. They celebrated 49 years of marriage. One of the happiest
experiences in her life was when she and John attended a Marriage
Encounter weekend. She spent her childhood in Santa Monica, their first
home together was in Los Angeles where they resided for over 25 years
before moving to Lompoc, CA, and spent her last quarter of a century in
Laguna Niguel.
Faith and family were the core of her existence. Gardening, reading,
walking her dogs and playing cards were her favorite pasttimes. The
family's favorite holiday is Thanksgiving where they gather for the
extended weekend playing games, enjoying each others company and good
food. This tradition started when she lived in Lompoc. When she moved to Laguna Niguel,
and the extended family grew, Thanksgiving became a destination celebration
in Lake Arrowhead, CA. Once she could no longer travel, Paul and Linda
started hosting Thanksgiving in their home. Rarely were there less than 30
people for dinner. This was the occasion of many favorite family memories.
Anyone that knew Kay will remember her for her gentle spirit and huge heart.
She saw the positive in everyone and every situation. Her presence on earth
will be missed but we all know we have a special angel in heaven.
A vigil/rosary service for Kay will be held at McCormick and Son Mortuary
in Laguna Hills, CA, on Wednesday, July 10, at 7 PM.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Timothy Catholic Church in Laguna
Niguel, CA on Thursday, July 11, at 10 AM followed by a Celebration of her
Life reception at the church hall.
The graveside burial service will be on Friday, July 12, in Lompoc, CA.
The family wants to extend a special thank you to all the caring and
compassionate people of the Silverado Hospice Team.
