Obituary

Stevens, Kay Lynette was born on August 24th, 1939 in Great Bend, Kansas. She graduated from Park Rose Senior High School in Oregon where she formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Kay wanted to be a nurse from childhood and attended nursing school in Oregon. She moved to Southern California to attend Mt. San Antonio College and became president of Women Students. She met her husband, James Stevens and both fell deeply in love with each other. Kay married James in 1962 and had two children, Dana and Tod while starting her career as a registered nurse. A decade later she had a son, Ryan. She was a loving mother and a devoted daughter to her mother Donna Priest who she cared for until Donna passed at age 101. Kay was cherished and adored by her three grandchildren. She was active in her community, volunteering her time and professional knowledge. She directed the development of the Laguna Beach Free Clinic. Her love of dogs, cats, and animals was well known and she was active in supporting the Blue Bell Country Club for Cats. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 and a Master of Arts in Management with Distinction in 1986 from the University of Redlands. She was honored with a lifetime membership in the National Honor Society.

She worked as a Registered Nurse in a Management Capacity in the ICU, CCU and Medical Unit, in-service education clinical instructor and relief hospital supervisor at South Coast Medical Center in South Laguna. She was a faculty member for the Health Careers Teacher Training Program at California Polytechnic University. Kay consulted for the State of California as a project coordinator and was instrumental in impacting Model Curriculum Standards and Frameworks for Medical Assisting and Medical Clerical Programs. She participated in Quality Criteria Review of California Schools. Kay was an author who wrote many educational publications including Being a Health Unit Coordinator in 2002 and the Medical-Clerical Series (series creator and editor) in 2003 for Brady-Prentice Hall. Most recently she was the Contributing Editor for Essential Skills for Health Career Success. She was the Professor and Department Chair for the Medical Assistant Program, Clinical and Administrative Programs at Saddleback College From 1990 until she passed. Her professional passion was teaching her students at Saddleback College to be successful on the path of their medical career.

Kay and James traveled worldwide and enjoyed a full and active life with thier friends and family. Kay was beautiful and an elegant person both physically and spiritually. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was great fun, and was very intelligent. She had a supreme capacity for love and forgiveness.

She is survived by her beloved husband, James Stevens, three children, Dana Jiron, Tod Stevens, Ryan Cox, and her sister Ann McDonald.

Internment Services will be held December 19, 2014 at the El Toro Memorial Park 11:00 a.m.

Please join us for a Celebration of her Life, following the graveside, at the Laguna Country United Methodist Church at 1 p.m.
