Kenneth Randall Bandy, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed peacefully at his home in Dana Point surrounded by his family on September 14, 2021. Ken was born in Beaver, Ohio on September 18, 1940 to Jake and Elizabeth Bandy. Ken had three sisters and three brothers. Ken was the last surviving member of his family. The Helton family became part of Kenny's life when his widowed father married Fern Helton who had seven grown children with families. Ken and Ida become one of them.
Ken grew up in the small town of Omega, Ohio helping out on the family farm. He couldn't wait to explore the world outside of Omega. Ken joined the Army in 1958 at age 18 where he was enlisted for 23 years. Ken's first assignment was to Germany in 1959 where he met the love of his life, Ida. Ken and Ida were married in 1960 and enjoyed a long, loving and happy marriage of 61 years. They had two sons, Thomas born in Nüremberg, Germany and Patterson born in Fort Lewis, Washington.
During Ken's Military career, the family lived and traveled to many different locations. The whole family enjoyed spending time together camping in Germany and nearby Italy. Skiing in the Alps of Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France and Austria. Ken loved building small cabins for the family to enjoy and he built many over the years. Ken's additional assignments were Fort Knox, Kentucky; Frankfurt, Germany; Fort McCoy, Wisconsin; Fort Hood, Texas; Vietnam; Neu-Ulm, Germany; and Munich, Germany.
For most of Ken's Army career, his job assignment was Officer's Club and Hotel Manager. Ken loved his job and made many friends, some he remained in contact with until recently. After Ken retired from the Military, he worked for the Department of Defense in the same job title for 20 years until retiring in 2004.
After retiring, Ken and Ida moved to their home in Dana Point. They loved traveling to their log home in Ohio and their home in Bavaria and visiting with family there. You could always find Ken in his garage tinkering around or building something. He could fix anything. He also loved walking along the beach of Dana Point collecting sea glass. One of the family's Christmas tradition, Ken would read a Christmas story and the family would all sing Christmas songs together.
Ken is survived by his wife Ida, sons Thomas and Patterson and grandson Jordan, along with Patterson's family Karen, Josh, Sarah and Sage. Ken loved his family and would do anything for them. Ken enjoyed every minute of life. Ken gave us so many good memories and provided a wonderful life for all of his family. He will be so very missed.
Services to be held on November 1, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, CA.
