Kenneth Martin Janis, born August 12, 1939 passed away August 4, 2013, at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Judy Janis, his two children, Erik Janis and Alissa Oudejans, daughter by marriage, Jennifer Alcone, and brother Mark Janis. Ken was also blessed with 6 grandchildren.
Ken was born in Brooklyn, New York, the first child of Robert and Ida Janis. He attended Colgate Univeristy, in Hamilton, New York and graduated in 1960. After that, he went on to obtain his Medical Doctorate degree from New York University (Bellevue), in New York City in 1964. To begin his life-long journey as a Doctor, Ken started as a Surgical intern at Boston City Hospital in 1964, and then completed his residency in Anesthesiolgy at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1968. After his residency, Ken completed a fellowship in Anesthesiology at Stanford University, Stanford, California. In 1968, Ken became a Captain in the United States Air Force as a doctor at Wilford Hall Hospital at Lackland AFB, in San Antonio, Texas. The next stops in his journey took him to Gainesville, Florida as an Associate Professor in Anesthesiology, at the University of Florida from 1970-71, and then on to Sarasota, Florida, as a Staff Physician at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital form 1971 to 1972. During that time, he also maintained an Assistant Clinical Professorship at the University of Florida. From 1972 through 1974, Ken then moved on to become an Instructor and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1974, Ken decided it was time to begin private practice in Anesthesiology. He chose Saddleback Memorial Hospital in Laguna Hills, California, as a founding physician when it first opened. He also joined the staff of Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. While in private practice, he got involved in teaching and became an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California Irvine and San Diego medical schools. Ken always had a love of the desert, and in 1988, after 18 years in California, he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to became a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of New Mexico, as well as becoming the Assistant Chief of the Anesthesia department at the Veteran's Administration. Fortune smiled on Ken and he met Judy in 1989. On October 3rd, 1992, they were married and settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While in New Mexico, Ken discovered a true calling for teaching and mentoring young medical students getting started in their careers as Doctors.
During Ken's illustrious medical career, he was credited with authoring 35 published papers on different aspects of Anesthesiology. He was also an accomplished public speaker and lectured extensively through out his long career, specializing in Geriatric Anesthesia.
Ken had a passion for exercise, lifting weights and distance running. Even as a busy Doctor, he ran every day and found the time to complete 68 Marathons (some around the world) and 14 Ultra Marathons. He specifically had a love for the city of Boston, and he ran the Boston Marathon 6 times. Ken also loved the mountains, and in 1981, he was part of a medical expedition that climbed to the Base Camp on Mount Everest to study the effects of altitude on exercise. Ken had a strong love for dogs as well. Another one of Ken's hobbies was studying Military history – WWII though the Vietnam era.
Ken and Judy loved to travel, cruising, and had a common love of movies and shows.
On August 4th, 2013, Ken passed away from complications due to Parkinson's disease.
