IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Laura Lewis
Angel
March 28, 1934 – February 24, 2023
Passed away the evening of Friday February 24th after enjoying only one month in her beautiful mountain scape home in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Family and friends visited her in the days preceding her death. Maria her beloved daughter was at her side and holding her hand until the moment she passed into the afterlife.
Laura was born in East Moline, Illinois on March 28th 1934 to Andrew and Sophia (Louridaikis). She was the eldest of 3 siblings. Her brother John Lewis, the youngest of the three, proceeded her in death in 1994. She is survived by her daughter, Maria Angel, a sister Antonia "Toni" McKown, a large and beloved extended family of many cousins and her adoring cat.
She attended grade school in IL and Junior and Senior High School in Huntington Park, CA where she excelled academically. Graduating 2nd in her class, she received a scholarship to Pepperdine College but elected instead to enter the workforce to help her family. She was immediately offered a secretarial position with US Steel where she stayed for 4 years. In 1958, she became Secretary to the Clergy at her church the newly constructed Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles where she worked until 1962. It was here where she met her husband, Homer Angel of Seattle. They fell in love and were married. In 1963 they were blessed with an only daughter, Maria Christina, who quickly became Laura's pride and joy. Throughout her career, Laura contributed her administrative skills to many industries and retired at age 67 from Payless Shoe Source where she spent 15 years in the Real Estate department helping to open many stores throughout the country.
The accomplishment she was most proud of was in 1990. She served as Secretary and Coordinator for a NATO sponsored international Robotics Engineering Conference held on the beautiful island of Corfu, Greece. She was selected above all due to her excellent organizational skills, her pleasant personality and her ability to speak Greek. It was a trip of a lifetime and she was elated to have Maria join her at the end of the 14 day conference, where they sailed to the mainland and toured together the homeland of their ancestors.
Laura loved God and she loved Maria. She cherished her daughter and anyone who spent any amount of time around her would know this. She couldn't stop talking about how proud she was of all her accomplishments. She especially loved Maria's take on her Restaurateur and Chef Father's Greek dishes and how everything she did was just right in her eyes. Her trip in 2007 to Maria's adopted home of Alaska, was another huge highlight of her lifetime.
Laura (or Laurie as the Pappas' called her) enjoyed her years of retirement, doing the things that brought her the most joy: needlecrafts, reading, watching old movies and staying active in various church organizations especially Saint Paul's in Irvine, CA where she was a Founding Member and participated in the philanthropic group Philoptochos and weekly bible studies. She enjoyed singing most of all and was blessed with a beautiful voice. She proudly sang for decades with the Saint Sophia and Saint Paul's Greek Orthodox Church choirs.
Laura's long and beautiful life will be celebrated in Irvine, CA at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church on March 13th at a 7pm Trisigion and her Funeral will take place the following day March 14th at St Paul's again at 11:30am. Burial will take place at El Toro Cemetery in Lake Forest, CA following church services.
