CAFARELLA, Laurence A., 82. A long-time resident of Laguna Beach, CA, Larry passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 21, 2016, after a long battle with Parkinson's. He grew up in Watertown, MA, and graduated from Watertown High School, class of 1952, where he was an outstanding athlete. In 1954, he enlisted in the Army, where he became 3rd Army Hammer throw Champion. He then attended Boston University, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts.
While enrolled in Boston University, Larry continued his interest in Track and Field, and excelled in shot put and discus throw. He held the record as shot put champion throughout his years at B.U. Larry then became a field events coach at Boston University, and mentored Philip Conway from Ireland, who eventually broke Larry's shot put record.
While attending Boston University, Larry went to a track meet at Northeastern University, where he met Janice DeAngelis of Revere, MA. They were married in 1960, and recently celebrated 56 years of marriage.
Larry taught art at Watertown High School until 1968, when he and his wife and two daughters moved to Southern California. He taught art and photography at Buena Park High School, retiring after 28 years there. In May of 1997, Larry was inducted into the Watertown High School Hall of Fame for outstanding performance in Football and Track and Field. In his free time, Larry enjoyed scuba diving, sculpting, photography and painting.
Larry is survived by his wife, Janice, and his daughter Linda Cafarella of Laguna Beach, CA, and his daughter Christine, son-in-law Christopher Lampard and beloved granddaughter, Lucia, who reside in Wilton, CT.
