Major transitioned on the 15th of August 2025 at the age of 83 at his home in Irvine, CA.  Our beloved Husband, Father and Veteran was called to eternal rest after a courageous battle with medical ailments this past year. He was a man of strength, discipline, and quiet dedication, who's life was marked by service, love of sport, and an unwavering commitment to family.

Major was born December 4, 1941, in Richmond, Virginia was also lovingly known as Buddy to his brother and sisters.  Second born child to Major Henry Smith Jr. and Willie Margaret Brown Smith of Richmond, Virginia.  He has three siblings Jean Gloria Taylor (passed), James Alfred Smith and Loretta Beatrice Smith.  Major leaves to cherish his life his childhood sweetheart of 65 years Helena Catherine Settles whom he married on August 24th, 1960, three daughters Simone D. Smith, Kimberly M. Smith, Paula Y. Smith and a cherished nephew Michael A. Settles.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Major honorably served his country for 21 years, retiring in Alamogordo, New Mexico as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force with distinction after a career defined by leadership and sacrifice including a plethora of service medals and honors including the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and Small Arms Marksmanship expert.  He continued to serve his country with a 22-year Federal Civil Service Career where he was awarded the Professional Provider of the Year award.  Major retired in the capacity of Flight Service Manufacture Manager.

Beyond his military career, Major was an exceptional athlete remembered not only for his talent and competitive spirit but also humility with which he carried his achievements.  An avid golfer, he found joy and peace on the course, often sharing that passion with his close friend Elwood Holland of Alamogordo whom he considered like a son, and bowling whom he shared with his wife.

In his later years, Major chose to live a quiet life, devoting himself to the care and wellbeing of his beloved wife and daughters.  His unconditional love will remain a source of strength and comfort to all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished.
