Marie was born in New York City and grew up on 163rd street. She went to PS 163, where she enjoyed typing and math and graduated with secretarial trade skills. She was the youngest of 9 children; both parents Frederick and Andela Becker and siblings, Anna, Charles, Freddy, Johnny, Elizabeth, Wilamena, Richie, and Charlie are deceased. She is survived by two sister-in-laws, Adelaide Becker and Sally Becker. She also is survived by 20 nieces and nephews. Until the day she died, she had fond memories of her family and always spoke highly of her mother. She was very close to her family, and they all leaned on one another during difficult times. She loved her family every day of her life and she often longed for the "good ole days."
Her loving husband, Edward Moriarty, also grew up on 163rd street. They were married at St. Rose of Lima in NYC on May 15, 1948. On August 16, 1965, Eddie passed away at the age of 38. After his death, she raised their three children, Eddie, Debbie, and Nora. At the time of their father's death they were just 11, 5 and 4 months old. Not a day in her life passed by without her having loving thoughts of her husband whom she missed dearly.
Marie and Eddie lived in NYC and in Fair Lawn, NJ. Her spoken memories painted a romantic picture of NYC. When she was young, Marie worked for the phone company and later worked as a homemaker, and did various jobs, including taking care of the elderly and young children.
In 2001, Marie moved out to Southern California to be closer to her grandchildren. She lived in three states during her life but she was always a New Yorker at heart. Her family enjoyed having her close by to share experiences with their wonderful grandmother and celebrate the holidays together.
Marie loved to play games and was a true storyteller, passing down family stories and keeping people alive through her stories. Marie's hobbies consisted of swimming leisurely at High Bridge, Memorial Pool and Laguna Woods. She loved dancing, enjoyed talking to people, making friends, and always getting people to laugh. She was great cook, having learned from recipes passed down by her mother. Delicious food was a top priority, and her family bonded over a shared love of good food.Marie made friends easily and was a fun character to have at any event.
Marie had a strong faith in God and was a Lutheran. She prayed for everyone who needed help. Many of her prayers were answered.
Marie leaves behind her three children, Eddie and his wife Christine, Debbie, Nora and her husband Ray and her two granddaughters, Samantha and Nicole. She will be deeply missed for many years to come. We look forward to keeping her spirit alive through more storytelling of her and we are happy to know that she is at peace.
Marie would advise you to enjoy life and to grab the good times while you can. The bad times will come but the happy memories will get you through the rough patches. She would stress the importance of having good health, and most importantly, surrounding yourself with good people. Please celebrate her beautiful life.
