IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marlana Carole
Mathieu
November 21, 1933 – December 16, 2022
Marlana Carole Mathieu of Laguna Woods, California passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on December 16, 2022.
Born in Chicago on November 21, 1933, Marlana was the second child of Caroline and William Benton. She is survived by her beloved husband, Rene Mathieu, her children Donna Wallace (Harry), Bill Gordon (Alison), stepchildren Michelle Mathieu-Scott (Rich), Jeff Lewis-Mathieu (Buck) and granddaughters Camille Wallace and Amber Matthews. She was preceded in death by her daughter Karen (1958-1974) and her sister Marilyn (1930-2020).
Marlana was never happier than when she was with Rene and her family. She cherished her children and grandchildren, was immeasurably proud of them, rooted for them, and delighted in hearing details of their lives. They were her greatest joy. She leaves them her undying love–more than words can ever describe.
She lived a beautiful life and was as fun-loving and adventurous as she was elegant. Marlana lit up any room she entered. She was lovely, loving and kind-hearted, embodying grace and grit. She had a spark. She often reminisced about her 15-year career as a top real estate agent, her gift shop in Glen Ellyn, IL, playing Bridge, her wonderful friends, dancing with Rene, and their world-travels. Marlana was an avid reader, loved champagne and sneaking treats to her sweet little dog, Coco. She loved a good laugh and found the zinging put-downs from the Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey especially amusing, "If you can't say anything helpful, please stay silent."
Her homes, whether in Chicago, Scottsdale, or Laguna Woods, were exquisitely decorated, warm and welcoming. Holidays were her favorite days of the year, none more than Christmas. Together, Rene and Marlana hosted innumerable gatherings over the years for family and friends, reflected in the photos adorning their fireplace mantle – memories of their happiest times as a couple and with their family.
Marlana had a passion for travel. Vacations with Rene brought out her inner travel agent, her heart for exploring the world, and some of her fondest–and funniest–memories. They went on marvelous trips together and their friendliness and her warm smile resulted in making new friends at every port. Spending glamorous evenings in Paris, Vienna and Hong Kong, riding camels to dinner in Australia, seeing the pyramids along the Nile, and walking on the Great Wall of China were just a few of the many amazing adventures they had together.
Rene's devotion to Marlana throughout their 51 years of marriage, and his tender care for her during her last several years of declining health enabled her to stay comfortably at home despite being bed-bound. Throughout those challenging years, her spark remained as Rene lovingly provided her care and exemplified what a remarkable man he is, and why he was the love of Marlana's life.
There will be a Celebration of Life for family and close friends.
