Obituary

Martha DeMond, 86, of Mission Viejo peacefully passed away on December 09, 2013.

Martha was born in Shettleston, Glasgow, in Scotland to Alex Donnelly and Catherine Wood on December 01, 1927. She came to the United States at 2 1/2 years old with her 9 month old sister Agnes and her mother, Catherine. She was proud of her Scottish heritage and has her name on the Ellis Island wall along with her mother, father and sister. She went to school at Eastview High School in White Plains, NY.

Martha married Robert "Bob" Paul DeMond on January 16, 1957 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Martha was a homemaker, taking care of Bob and their children. Bob served in the Air Force so that meant moving every few years when Bob was assigned to different bases. They lived in New York, California, England, North Carolina, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri then retiring in California. Used to moving every couple of years, they moved to Kentucky, Georgia, and then Florida. They lived there for several years, joined by her sisters Agnes and Margaret and their husbands. The Florida humidity finally got the best of Martha so they picked up their roots again and moved to Arizona and then California to be closer to family. When Bob passed on, Martha moved to Laguna Woods, minutes away from her son and family.

While living in England they were introduced to cribbage and darts, which became passions for them. Anything they could do and have a cold beer at the same time was the perfect combination. Despite the moving, Bob and Martha always found time for family vacations, often involving water and fishing. Though their favorite "fishing holes" were in Florida, they always found a pond or lake wherever they lived where they could toss out a bobber, picnic and have a cold beer.

One of Martha's passions was playing Duplicate Bridge. While living in Indianapolis, Indiana, she sharpened her skills under the tutelage of actor and bridge aficionado Omar Sharif. Within a couple years, playing often 3-5 times a week, locally and traveling to tournaments out of state, Martha attained the level of Life Master-Life Member, a goal not often achieved by bridge players. Martha was always the partner of choice to any player fortunate enough to partner with her.

Martha is preceded in death by her devoted husband and dearest friend of 47 years, Bob DeMond.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Catherine Ann Juchniewicz, son, Roger DeMond, sister Agnes Girillo, grandchildren, Jason DeMond, Chris Ann D'Amato, Kelly Fassett and great grandchildren, Jordan, Allie, Jacob, Paul Michael and CJ.

Martha was a fun-loving soul, enjoyed life, friends and family, always ready for a road trip (to go bye-bye). She will be missed. Martha's wishes were to not have a ceremony or memorial and her ashes will be scattered with those of her late husband, Bob. The family of Roger DeMond wishes to extend their sincere thanks to McCormick & Son Mortuary for their help and guidance at this difficult time.

Memorial donations may be made in Martha's name to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
