Mary Hazel was born in Paris, Illinois the second child of three children of Forrest Chew and Christine Houston Chew. Mary Hazel attended a one-room school house during her elementary years and graduated from Paris High School in 1938. After graduation she worked as a bookkeeper.

After the war Mary Hazel moved to Los Angeles where she met Tom and was married in 1953. Their first home was in Silver Lake until they moved in 1958 to the home they built in the Hollywood Hills. Mary Hazel was a homemaker raising her three children, while volunteering in a variety of social and charitable organizations. With their tireless work ethic and strategic investments, they were able to retire in 1986 and start the next phase of their life together in Mission Viejo.

They loved to travel enjoying several cruises, trips to Europe and road trips throughout the United States and Canada. When they returned Mary Hazel looked forward to her weekly bridge games, visiting with her family and friends, and tending her vegetable garden.
