Obituary

Mary Kourembis, 93, of Laguna Woods, CA died peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 3, 2014.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Athanasios and Eleni (Vroustouris) Kourembis. She was a graduate of Lowell High School and Lowell Commercial College and was employed in Lowell City Hall prior to accepting Federal employment in Washington, DC with the Department of the Army. In 1944 she joined the ranks of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and then its successor agency the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) which she served with distinction for 30 years. Her assignments and travels took her to many parts of the world including England, Italy, Greece, Algiers, Cairo. She also worked in war-torn Austria and later in Germany.

Mary was a life member of the Officers of Strategic Services Society, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), the Foreign Officers Association, And the Central Intelligence Retirees Association (CIRA).

Mary was proud and humbled to have served her country and she remained a patriot to the end. After serving with the CIA for 30 years, she retired in Arlington, VA before relocating to Laguna Woods CA in 1986. She was an active member of St. Sophia Cathedral in Washington, DC for many years as well as St. Paul?s Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, CA.

For her family she leaves many beautiful memories and a void that will not be filled. She was loved and respected and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her sister, Jennifer Kourembis, of Laguna Woods, her nieces, Elaine Stephanides of Laguna Hills and Anastasia Pappas of Albuquerque, NM; nephews John Kolofolias and Arthur Kourembis both of Lowell, MA; several grand and great grandnieces and nephews.

A Trisagion service will take place at St. Paul?s Church, 4949 Alton Parkway, Irvine on Friday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul?s on Saturday, August 8, at 10 a.m.
