IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mattie Robinson
Sherman
November 19, 1934 – April 10, 2022
Mattie Robinson Sherman, 87 years of age, passed away at her residence in Laguna Woods, CA on Palm Sunday, April 10 th , 2022.
Mattie was born on November 19, 1934 in Clayton, Alabama to Alto & Edna Robinson. She grew-up in a house that still stands today on West Louisville Avenue, where she was raised with her sister Mary, and brothers Johnny, Buford, and Billy. Mattie graduated from Clayton High School in 1952 and attended Auburn University that same year where she met her future husband, Frederick Earl Sherman. Fred proposed to Mattie under the waterfalls of Lake Chewacla in Auburn, and were married at the Clayton United Methodist Church in 1953.
In 1954 Mattie & Fred moved to Pasadena, CA where Fred would join a veterinary practice. Mattie worked at Nash's Department Store, first in retail sales but soon found a talent for accounting. In 1956 they moved to Spring Valley, CA in San Diego County where both Mattie & Fred built the Spring Valley Veterinary Clinic. For the next three decades Fred treated the animals and Mattie took care of the books. In 1968 they built a house in La Mesa, CA where they thrived for 21 years and put each of their children, Julia, Fred, John, & Matt though college. In 1989 they moved to Montgomery, AL to enjoy retirement and to spend time with Grandma Edna, and Mattie's siblings. After Fred's passing in 2007, Mattie moved to Laguna Woods, CA to be close to family, enjoy great weather and excellent Mexican food, and receive an incredible amount of love, support, and friendship from her daughter Julia who lived 5 minutes away.
'In a rock throwing incident at Takahashi Farms in Spring Valley, because Mom had eyes in the back of her head, she knew that John threw the rock…'.
Mattie was a member of PEO International, the CASH Unlimited Investment Club, many Parent/Teacher Associations, and the Monte Vista & Valhalla High School Boosters just to name a few. She was an avid china painter and a great supporter of music and the arts, including the Suzuki Music Institute as each of her children are accomplished musicians. One of her most impactful achievements was being both the glue and driving force of keeping the Sherman family together and thriving in both good times and bad. In moving to the west coast without family support, she was able to continue and strengthen the Sherman family legacy to the present day as it continues to thrive.
Mattie is survived by her four children Julia, Fred, John, & Matthew; by grandchildren Carolyn, Katie, Ginny, Ryan, Alexandra, Emily, Brandon, Eli & Olivia; and great-grandchildren Elodie, Nico, Sofia, & Mattie, as well as by her sweetheart Jack Mullen. Mattie was blessed to find love and companionship during the last decade + of her life with Jack who was an old friend from Pasadena. Mattie was predeceased by her husband Fred, and her siblings Mary, Johnny, Buford, & Billy.
Mattie's immediate family will hold a private service at the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, CA on Friday June 24, 2022. Both Mattie & Fred will be laid to rest, honored by a 21-gun salute for Fred's military service.
