Obituary

Michael Sedor , 81, passed away from complications related to a hemorrhagic stroke on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at his home in Torrance, CA with his daughter Betty by his side, surrounded by pure love and adoration.Michael, also known by friends and family as "Mike," "Uncle Mike," "Mr. Mike," "Seeds" or "The Seeds" loved planes, trains, cars, chocolate, coffee, Elvis music, skiing, blackjack, action movies, and baseball.

Born January 19, 1939 (Maizeville, PA) to Anna E. Sedor (1912-2007) and Michael Sedor (1907-1964), in an idyllic coal-mining village, he enjoyed a childhood of wonder: full of memories of picking fresh huckleberries from his backyard mountains, swimming in verdant wild creeks, eating his mom's classic Polish cooking (including the world's best pierogies), helping out at his dad's Atlantic service station, watching majestic trains pass by, and serving as an altar boy at Our Lady of Siluva (St. Louis) Roman Catholic Church--a spiritual sanctuary about which he reminisced often and with awe, and that inspired his passion for and love of the Catholic faith.

After graduating class of 1956 from Shenandoah Catholic High School (Shenandoah, PA), he served in the US Navy as a Communications Technician stationed in Adak, Alaska on the USSR border and then in Kami Seya, Japan. Upon completion of his Naval service, on January 18, 1960, he began an illustrious three-decade-long career working for United Airlines during some of the most formative and glamorous years of air travel history: starting out at Philadelphia, PA airport as a Ramp Serviceman, then as a Station Agent at Allentown, PA airport--where he met his future wife--then to Los Angeles, CA airport where he worked his way from a Customer Service Agent to an In-Flight Supervisor (Friendship Services Director), to a Customer Service Supervisor, and then an Operations Supervisor. His achievements with United Airlines included working the inaugural Los Angeles to Honolulu 747-aircraft flight and being a part of the team(s) that opened up United Airlines' stations in Tokyo and Hong Kong.Additionally, from 1965-1968, he successfully owned and operated the infamous "Cat's Meow" cocktail lounge (Torrance CA).

Predeceased by his wife, Betty Lou Sedor (née Geurdes, July 1, 1937-July 19, 1969) who died of pregnancy-related complications, Michael began his proudest achievement, raising his infant daughter Betty Lou Sedor. The two were indelible, lifelong soul mates.A father-daughter dynamic-duo team of rare and epic proportions--known for their protective and boundless love of one another, and their ability to make each other laugh and make others laugh even in the midst of crisis. They could finish each other's sentences, read each other's emotions, and light up a room with their love for one another.

Also predeceased by his sister Dolores A. Krol (née Sedor) and his parents. Survived by his daughter Betty Lou Sedor Towns and son-in-law Jim Towns (San Pedro, CA); nieces and nephews Jill Anne Troilo, Michael Krol, Mary Beth Iehle and Joseph Krol; and his devoted housekeeper & friend Horalia Perez Lopez, who also had helped care for Michael's mother prior to her passing.

A two-time lung cancer survivor, Michael will be remembered for his courage and strength, his "cool cat" charm, his hilarious sense of humor, his magnanimous generosity, his boyish-flirty winks and smiles, his authentic nature and no-nonsense philosophy, his animated bright blue eyes, his rascally-fun laughter, and for having the biggest, most truest heart of gold.

An online memorial and prayer service will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2020, 2pm PST/5pm EST.Interment of ashes, St. John Greek Catholic Cemetery (Frackville, PA).Michael's preferred charity was St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to end childhood cancer:stjude.org or 1-800-805-5856.
