Nei-Jia Chin, born on December 30, 1934 in Zhengzhou (Henan Province) China, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 14, surrounded by her 3 children.
Nei-Jia was born to Ren-Huan and Shu-Ying Chen, the fourth of five children. She grew up near Beijing, and later moved to Taiwan with her family. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics from the Taiwan Provincial College of Agriculture in Taichung in 1957, then came to the United States for further studies and met her husband, Ting-Fong Chin, at the University of Iowa.
Nei-Jia married Ting-Fong at the First Baptist Church in Iowa City in 1963.Her parents were unable to make the long journey from Taiwan to attend their wedding. Her uncle Yao-Tzu Li flew from Boston to Iowa City to walk her down the aisle in her father's place. After Ting-Fong became a professor at the University of Iowa, the two of them hosted many of Ting-Fong's graduate students for dinners and during holidays. Many of these former students remain their close friends today.
While in Iowa, Nei-Jia and Ting-Fong raised three children: Richard, Lisa, and Roger, who grew up and moved to the east and west coasts. For a few years, Nei-Jia worked at a company that processed standardized tests for schools nationwide. This would occasionally give her an early peek at her children's test results.
After Ting-Fong's retirement from the University of Iowa, the two of them enjoyed many domestic and international trips both as tourists and as parents eager to keep an eye on their children's early career moves.A decade ago, they made the brave decision to downsize and move into a two-bedroom condo in Laguna Woods, California. In a warm, sunny climate and within an active retirement community, Nei-Jia found many ways to stay active by participating in photography classes, computer classes, and bridge club. She was also very devoted to the care of Ting-Fong.
Services will be held Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at McCormick & Son Mortuary at 25000 Moulton Parkway in Laguna Hills, California 92653.A brief reception will follow.Nei-Jia will be laid to rest at El Toro Memorial Park in Lake Forest, California.
