Obituary

Nelson S. C. Chen was born on November 5, 1941 and passed away peacefully on May 21, 2016 at the age of 74 in Lake Forest, CA. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nancy; his daughters Loui Kou (Walnut Creek, CA) and Celia Chan (Lake Forest, CA); son-in-laws Joe Kou and Wayne Chan; grandchildren Xavier Kou, Lexie Kou, Abigail Chan, and Noah Chan; brothers Shih-Chang, Shih-Chung, Shih-Ming, Shih-Tien, Shih-Chuan, Shih-Chieh, Shih-Chin (Taiwan); sisters Hsing-Chuang Ko (Taiwan) and Li-Chen Chen (Ann Arbor, MI), and many other friends and family.

Nelson was born in Taichung Hsien, Waipu Hsiang of Taiwan. He was the third son of Teng-Chia Chen (father) and Yuan Chang (mother) out of 11 children. He graduated from Waipu Elementary school and Da-Chia Junior & Senior High School. He received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine from Chung-Hsing University in 1965 and then worked with the Agriculture Improvement Team in the Philippines from 1966 to 1970. In 1970, he immigrated to the United States to further his education. He received his Master's Degree of Nutrition and his Ph.D. in 1977 from Washington State University (Pullman) becoming the first in his family to receive a Ph.D. He completed post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) from 1977 to 1978 and then began pursuing his lifelong passion of being an entrepreneur. He was a realtor from 1978 to 1980, a manager and owner of a Chinese restaurant, China Garden, from 1980 to 1996, and then a manager and owner of tennis pro shop, Cayman Sports, from 1996 to 2014. He finally retired in May 2015 and moved from Ann Arbor, MI to California to be closer to grandkids and enjoy year-round tennis.

Nelson was an avid tennis player and aficionado. He enjoyed playing tennis with players of all ages and levels and was beloved within the tennis community. He taught his wife, daughters, and grandchildren how to play and enjoyed using his wicked slice shot on anyone who was willing to play with him. If he wasn't on the tennis courts, he was at home watching tennis or on the computer investing in stocks. Even though he sold his businesses, he continued to dabble in the business world through the stock market. We find comfort in knowing he passed away in front of the computer most likely reading up on stock info and watching sports in his Cayman gear, and then he closed his eyes to take a nap for the last time. He will be missed by his family, his friends, and the tennis community.

告別我的網球教練 Coach Nelson,PhD
