Peter K. Bartholomew Sr, born December 27, 1926, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at Belmont Village in Aliso Viejo, California. He was 97 years old.
Peter was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Eliot and Margaret "Peggy" (Martin) Bartholomew. He had two siblings; his sister Diana Brown who passed away in 2010, and his brother David Bartholomew who lives in Laguna Beach, California.
Peter lived an extraordinary life. In 1944, at the age of 17, he joined the United States Marine Corps (USMC) during WWII and was stationed in the Pacific. After returning to the States, he attended the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and learned to fly, which remained a passion of his throughout his life. After leaving school Peter joined the United Nations and worked in the Middle East for several years. Peter then joined AIG Insurance and lived in Cuba, the Philippines and Okinawa opening AIG offices. He left AIG for Paul Revere Life Insurance where he worked for many years. In 1956 he settled in Honolulu, Hawaii with his former wife Cynthia (Mooberry) Bartholomew (previously departed) where he raised his four children and lived up until just a few years ago.
Peter was also a successful entrepreneur. He owned and operated the Piper Plane Dealership in Hawaii, and ran the Stowehof Inn in Stowe, Vermont after purchasing it from former employer AIG. Peter was an incredible athlete who loved participating in all sports including tennis, surfing, swimming, sailing, skiing and motorcycle riding, most of which he did well into his nineties. He considered the family house in Gilmanton, New Hampshire home, and was the fourth-generation owner of this historic home. Here Peter cherished his endless hours of yard work, swimming and holding court at his beloved Loon Pond during summers throughout his entire life. With his big personality, incredible storytelling and wit, everyone enjoyed being around him.
Peter is survived by his four children: Peter "Ripper" Bartholomew Jr. and his wife Kate Bartholomew, Bruce "Butch" Bartholomew, Bonnie Bartholomew, Timothy "Tim" Bartholomew and his wife Katy Bartholomew; nine grandchildren: Meighan Merono, Anne Bartholomew, Peter Bartholomew III, Elisabeth Bartholomew, Peter Farmer, Sarah Snow Farmer (previously departed), Nikol Burke, Bruce "Brucer" Burke, Jonathan Bartholomew and Malia Bartholomew; and four great-grandchildren: Max Merono (15), Stella Merono (10), Avery Bartholomew (3), and Bennet Bartholomew (1).
He will be laid to rest in his family's cemetery at Smith Meeting House in Gilmanton, New Hampshire.
